Box Score NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Despite taking an early lead Sunday, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision at Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference action.
Southeastern (26-15, 9-6 Southland) falls one game back of SFA (21-18, 10-5 Southland) in the conference standings and into a four-way tie for second with Lamar, Sam Houston State and upcoming Southland-opponent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Lions picked up an early lead with a second-inning run.
Harry Slade was hit by a pitch to open the inning and went to third on
Ben Hernandez' single to right. Slade scored on
Ladd Rhodes' fielder's choice grounder.
SFA broke through in the third with a four-run inning, chasing Lion starter
Kaleb Manuel (2-3). Southeastern used five pitchers in the game with sophomore
Kyle Keller logging the most time on the mound. Keller tossed 3.2 scoreless innings to finish out the game for the Lions.
Southeastern clawed back within a pair in the fifth. Rhodes doubled into the right-center field gap with one out and scored one batter later when SFA shortstop Hunter Dozier booted a ground ball off the bat of SLU third baseman
Brett Hoffman.
The Lumberjacks responded quickly however, posting another four runs in the bottom-half of the inning.
Cass Ingvardsen (2-1), the first of two SFA relievers, earned the win while Manuel was saddled with the loss. Hernandez and Rhodes each recorded a pair of hits to lead the Lions at the plate.
Southeastern returns to action Tuesday at Louisiana-Lafayette. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
