Five-Run Lion Surge Swamps Green Wave

Southeastern battery powers comeback

Senior Ben Hernandez drew a key, two-out walk to keep alive the sixth inning in Southeastern's 7-4 win over Tulane
HAMMOND, La. – A key, two-out walk by Ben Hernandez set up a five-run sixth inning for the Southeastern Louisiana baseball team and a come-from-behind, 7-4 win Tuesday over the Tulane Green Wave at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

With Southeastern (11-5) trailing 4-2 in the sixth, Jesse Buratt and Sam Roberson opened the inning with a pair of singles. Left fielder Gabe Woods, a native of Albany, La., sacrificed both into scoring position before Brett Hoffman hit a screaming line drive right at Green Wave shortstop Brennan Middleton for the second out of the inning.

Hernandez fouled off a couple of full-count pitches before coaxing a walk out of Tulane starting pitcher Randy LeBlanc to keep the inning alive. Ladd Rhodes and Harry Slade each followed with singles to drive in Buratt, Roberson and Hernandez for the Lions' first lead of the game.

First baseman Aaron Haag greeted Green Wave reliever Kyle McKenzie with a bloop single to right, driving in Rhodes. Slade later scored from third on a wild pitch.

A combination of Kaleb Manuel (1-1) and Mason Klotz held the Tulane bats at bay after the Green Wave roughed up Lion starter Kyle Cedotal for three runs in the first two innings. In six innings of work, the right-handed duo held Tulane to one run on four hits and two walks, fanning 10. In all, Southeastern pitching struck out 13 batters.

Manuel earned his first win of the season, Klotz earned his first save and battery-mate Roberson picked up the first three-hit game of his career. Abita Springs, La., native Randy LeBlanc (0-2) suffered the loss for Tulane.

Southeastern faces Tulane again Wednesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, La. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet through the Southeastern athletics website as well as on the KSLU iPhone and TuneIn Radio apps. Live stats, courtesy Tulane, will also be available. Links to audio and stats are located on the baseball schedule page at  www.LionSports.net.
