Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana pitcher Sean Kennel was in command early during the Lions' 5-3 win Friday, retiring the first 12 Texas Southern batters and carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

Texas Southern pitcher Felix Gomez matched Kennel (1-0) inning-for-inning through the first four. Southeastern finally broke through against Gomez (1-1), batting around in the fifth inning while pushing five runs across the plate.

Corey Bryan, batting in the seventh spot in the order for the first time this season, led off the fifth with a single to left field. Bryan, forcing the issue, took off for second when the left fielder bobbled the ball and reached safely as the throw from the outfield kicked away.

Catcher Sam Roberson sacrificed Bryan to third and then Gomez ran into trouble with his control. He walked Brett Hoffman, putting runners on the corners. Ben Hernandez, hitting leadoff for the first time in a Lion uniform, pushed a bunt up the first-base line to drive home Bryan. Gomez then walked Jesse Buratt and Harry Slade to load the bases.

Aaron Haag and freshman Jameson Fisher followed with timely hits, each driving in a pair. Haag dumped a pitch into right-center for a double and Fisher lined a single up the middle for his third hit of the game.

Texas Southern chased Kennel in the eighth, scoring three runs and forcing the Lions into the bullpen.

Kennel, the junior right-hander from Slidell, La., earned his first win of the season while Dylan Hills picked up his second save. Gomez suffered his first loss of the season.

The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and fans can play baseball-themed bingo, with the first 20 fans to score five-in-a-row winning a prize. Live stats, as well as a live video stream through LionVision, will be available. Links to stats and video are located on the baseball schedule page at  www.LionSports.net.

Freshman right-hander Tate Scioneaux (2-0, 2.64) will throw Saturday for Southeastern against TSU sophomore righty Robert Pearson (1-1, 1.88).
