HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday when it travels to face archrival Nicholls State in a Southland Conference game at Stopher Gym.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will follow the Southeastern-Nicholls State women's game that is set for noon. Both games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet at www.LionSports.net, on the KSLU iPhone and TuneIn Radio app. A live video stream is also available through LionVision, which is located in the Fan Zone on www.LionSports.net.
Southeastern (8-12, 6-4 SLC), which is playing the last of three consecutive games on the road, returns to action after dropping a 65-59 decision last week at Oral Roberts while Nicholls (6-14, 5-5 SLC) looks to snap a two-game losing streak after suffering setbacks last week at ORU and Central Arkansas.
Brandon Fortenberry leads Southeastern in scoring at 13.4 points per game with
Roosevelt Johnson next in the scoring column at 11.7.
Dre Evans (9.4),
Jeffery Ricard (8.7),
Onochie Ochie (5.5) and
Antonnio Benton (5.1) are next in scoring for the Lions, who average 61.8 points per game overall and 65.4 points in league play.
Johnson paces the Lions, and is third in the Southland Conference, with 8.4 rebounds per game with Fortenberry averaging a team-high 2.9 assists.
Paced by Fred Hunter, the Southland Conference scoring leader at 19.3 points per game, Nicholls State is averaging 66.9 points as a team while posting a 4-1 record at home. Dantrell Thomas is next in scoring for the Colonels at 13.1 points per game followed by T.J. Carpenter (10.8), Jeremy Smith (8.5), Amin Torres (8.1) and Shane Rillieux (5.9).
Hunter leads the team, and is sixth in the Southland Conference, with 7.5 rebounds per game while Rillieux has dished out a team-high 2.5 assists.
The meeting will mark the 90th between the schools on the hardwood with Southeastern holding a 49-40 lead. The Lions claimed the earlier contest last month between the schools, 70-65, behind 21 points from Fortenberry and a 14-point, 14-rebound performance from Johnson.
