Cold Second Half Sends Lions To 66-52 Loss At Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Joab Jerome scored a game-high 14 points to lead five players in double figures and Winthrop capitalized on poor second half shooting by Southeastern Louisiana in earning a 66-52 victory in the 2013 Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters on Saturday at Winthrop Coliseum.

Gideon Gamble added 13 points as Winthrop (12-15) led 33-32 at halftime before outscoring Southeastern (10-15), 33-20, in the final 20 minutes. Andre Smith, Steve Johnson and Christian Farmer scored 12 points each for the Eagles, who held Southeastern to 6-for-21 aim (28.6 percent) from the floor in the second half.

Southeastern trailed 7-6 early in the contest before a basket by Rogers Woods sparked a 12-2 run. A pair of free throws and a basket by Onochie Ochie, free throws by Antonnio Benton and Dre Evans along with a bucket by Roosevelt Johnson gave Southeastern 18-9 lead before Winthrop scored eight straight points to cut the lead to 18-17.

A 3-pointer by Todd Nelson and a three-point play by Woods pushed Southeastern's lead to 24-17 with 8:18 remaining in the half and the Lions led 32-28 before five consecutive points by Farmer gave the Eagles a 33-32 lead at the break.

Winthrop pushed its lead to 51-41 on a pair of free throws by Jerome with 9:25 remaining and took its biggest lead of the game, 65-47, when Jerome added two more attempts from the charity stripe in going 12-for-17 from the line.

Evans led Southeastern, which finished 16-for-45 (35.6 percent) from the floor, with 11 points while Ochie added nine. Woods added seven points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for Southeastern while the Lions' top two scorers – Brandon Fortenberry and Johnson – were held to a combined 10 points on a combined 4-for-13 from the floor.

Southeastern will return to action on Thursday when it resumes Southland Conference play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
