Lions Visit McNeese State In Key Southland Hardwood Battle

Southeastern currently holding No. 4 spot in Southland rankings

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team looks to build off its biggest win of the season when it travels to Lake Charles to face Southland Conference rival McNeese State on Tuesday at Burton Coliseum.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will follow the Southeastern-McNeese State women's game that is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start. Both games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Winners of five of its past seven games, Southeastern (10-13, 8-5 SLC) earned its biggest win of the season on Saturday in a come-from-behind 54-50 decision over SLC leader Stephen F. Austin at the University Center. The Lions fell behind 12-0 in the first five-plus minutes of the contest before outscoring the Lumberjacks, 11-2, over the final 5:53 of the half to close to within 23-21 at the break.

The teams battled through seven ties and nine lead changes in the second half before a 3-pointer by Todd Nelson with 3:22 remaining gave Southeastern the lead for good at 48-45.

Brandon Fortenberry scored a game-high 16 points to lead Southeastern, which shot 56 percent (9-for-16) in the second half and held SFA to nearly 17 points below its scoring average. Nelson added 12 for the Lions, which maintained fourth place in the league standings and in contention for a first-round bye in the 2013 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament that will be held March 13-16 in Katy, Texas.

On the season, Fortenberry leads Southeastern in scoring (14.5 points), assists (2.8) and 3-pointers made (38). The fifth-year senior enters Tuesday's game needing one assist to become the second player in school history to record 400 in his career with former Lion player and coach Leo McClure recording 433 from 1973-77.

Roosevelt Johnson is next in scoring for Southeastern averaging 11.1 points while ranking third in the Southland Conference with 8.5 rebounds per game. The former Destrehan High product pulled down 14 boards against SFA increasing his career total to 562 and passing former Lion great and current Harlem Globetrotter Nate Lofton (553 rebounds from 2003-05) for 10th place on the school's all-time list.

Dre Evans (8.9 ppg.), Jeffery Ricard (8.4), Antonnio Benton (5.5), Onochie Ochie (5.3) and Nelson (5.1) are next in scoring for Southeastern, which averages 62.6 points per game overall and 65.9 points in SLC action.

McNeese State (10-13, 4-9 SLC) returns to Burton Coliseum for the first time since a 74-50 victory over Lamar on Jan. 19. The Cowboys, who played their last three games on the road, earned a sweep of LU with a 69-62 victory last week in Beaumont.

Dontae Cannon paces McNeese State in scoring at 11.8 points per game with Desharick Guidry averaging 11.7 points and a team-high 7.6 boards. Kevin Hardy (9.3 ppg.), Jeremie Mitchell (8.9), Craig McFerrin (8.6) and Adrian Fields (5.4) are next in scoring for the Cowboys, who average 65.9 points per game.

Southeastern trails in the all-time series between the schools, 58-39, but has won eight of the last 10 meetings overall and three of the last five in Lake Charles.
