HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to the University Center on Thursday when it plays host to in-state rival Northwestern State in a Southland Conference battle.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet at www.LionSports.net, and the KSLU iPhone and TuneIn Radio app. The game will also be televised on a tape-delayed basis on the Southeastern Channel. Southeastern (9-12, 7-4 SLC) returns to the University Center for the first time since a 67-53 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Jan. 26. The Lions, currently in fourth place in the Southland Conference standings, played their previous three games on the road earning wins against Central Arkansas and Nicholls State.
Brandon Fortenberry paced Southeastern at Nicholls State, tying career-highs in points scored (30) and 3-pointers made (5) in leading three players in double figures.
Dre Evans added 12 points for the Lions while
Roosevelt Johnson scored 10 while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Fortenberry leads Southeastern in scoring at 14.1 points per game while ranking second on the team with 4.8 rebounds. Johnson is next in scoring for the Lions at 11.7 points while grabbing a team-high 8.4 rebounds. Evans (9.5 ppg.),
Jeffery Ricard (8.6),
Onochie Ochie (5.3) and
Antonnio Benton (5.2) are next in scoring for the Lions, who average 62.3 points per game overall and 66.1 in Southland Conference play.
The Lions will face a Northwestern State (16-6, 10-2 SLC) team that has won its last six games and leads Division I in scoring at 84.3 points per game. The Demons, who have won 11 of their last 13 contests, have four players averaging in double figures led by newcomer DeQuan Hicks at 14.7 points per game. Shamir Davis (12.9), James Hulbin (12.4) and redshirt freshman Jalan West (10.6) are next in scoring for the Demons.
Northwestern State claimed the previous contest between the schools, 103-68, on Jan. 19 in Natchitoches as Davis scored a game-high 24 points to lead five players in double figures.
Hicks added 16 points for the Demons, who closed out the first half making 21 of their final 25 shots after starting the game 0-for-7. The Demons' 103 points scored marked the first time in a 253-game span that Southeastern had allowed 100 points in a game dating back to a 106-86 loss at former league rival UTSA on March 5, 2004.
