Southeastern Battles to Senior Day Tie With HBU

Lady Lions face UCA on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in SLC Tournament

Box Score

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana soccer team closed out the regular season with a 1-1 tie with Houston Baptist in Southland Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

Prior to the match, multi-time All-Southland seniors Kelsey Salcido and Shanyce Shaw were honored for Senior Day. Southeastern (13-3-3, 8-2-2 Southland) will be the No. 3 seed and face the sixth seed Central Arkansas in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Lake Charles. Houston Baptist finishes the season with a 5-12-2 overall record and 4-7-1 mark in league play.

The Lady Lions put constant pressure on HBU, finishing the match with a season-high 15 corner kicks – the fifth-highest total in school history. However, Southeastern could never put the game-winner in the back of the net.

"We continue to do a great job to create many opportunities, but we just could not find the net today when we needed it," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "Kelsey and Shanyce have been great representatives of our program and it would've been great to be able to close their home careers with a victory."

Southeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. Junior Chelsea Villaescusa played a corner kick to the far post that Cheyenne Maxwell headed off the cross bar. Maxwell stayed with the play and fired in the rebound from close range.

HBU knotted the score in the 69th minute. Junior Taylor Gibson finished a combination off assists from senior Lara Johnson and junior Natalie Hager to pull the Huskies even. Both teams had chances to grab the lead, but goalkeepers Hope Sabadash of Southeastern and HBU senior Shelby Horn held firm to end the match in a draw.

Should Southeastern get past UCA in the first round, it will move on to play Oral Roberts on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the semifinals. The semifinal winners will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the league tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Live stats and video for the tournament will be available at www.Southland.org. Sunday's championship match can be seen on ESPN3.
