Lady Lions Travel To In-State Foes McNeese, Nicholls

Southeastern looking for first conference win

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team heads out on the road Thursday in search of its first Southland Conference victory of the 2013 season.

Southeastern (6-10, 0-4 Southland) travels to McNeese State (10-8, 3-2 Southland) for a 7 p.m. first serve Thursday and Nicholls State (3-12, 0-5 Southland) for a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.

The Lady Lion offense is led by Tiffany Thomas (3.30 kills per set), Rachael Bunn (.353 attack percentage) and Mikayala Shippy (9.44 assists per set). Bunn is second in the Southland in attack percentage. Thomas and Shippy are each sixth, respectively, in kills and assists.

Landry Bullock (1.07 blocks per set), Bunn (0.85 b/set) and Morgan Todd (4.25 digs per set) lead one of the best defenses in the Southland. Southeastern is third in the conference in blocks (1.99/set) and fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.182). Bullock is third in blocks while Bunn is ninth. Todd is fifth in digs.

Southeastern has dropped its first four Southland matches, with three of the four opponents -
Central Arkansas, Northwestern State and Oral Roberts - remaining undefeated in conference action.

Malina Sanchez (3.89 k/set, 2.50 d/set), the reigning Southland Offensive Player of the Week, leads the Cowgirl offense. Sophie Tenbusch (2.67 k/set), Rachel Cagnina (2.27 k/set) and Vanessa Bentley (8.86 a/set) are other key offensive contributors.

The second-best blocking team (2.02 b/set) in the Southland, Amber Fryer (0.89 b/set) leads the way at the net. Along the back row Kaylen Wolfe (3.34 d/set), Sanchez and Kara Rockey (2.44 d/set) anchor the McNeese defense.

Undfeated in three matches last week, the Cowgirls swept a pair of conference contests from Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word.

Kayla Burling (3.24 k/set) and Kayla Mashburn (2.78 k/set) are the offensive leaders for the Colonels who have used three different setters this season. Burling also leads Nicholls with 2.29 digs per set.

Falling earlier this week in a conference contest against Houston Baptist, the Colonels have lost their last six contests.

Southeastern returns home to face Houston Baptist, Oct. 10, for Dig the Lions. The 7 p.m. Southland contest will feature free food, while it lasts, for students as well as T-shirts for the first 300 students in attendance.
