HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team established a season high in blocks, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fought back for the four-set Southland Conference win Saturday in the University Center.
Southeastern (5-9, 1-5 Southland) dropped the match, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-27.
Senior
Courtney Donald recorded 16 kills and six blocks for the Lady Lions, who posted a season-best 15 total blocks.
Veronica Turk tallied eight kills and
Shelby Devlin added seven kills to go along with a career-high nine blocks. Junior
Megan McMillin also established a new career high with 27 digs.
The Lady Lions statistically out-played A&M-Corpus Christi in the first set. With four more kills and a five-point scoring advantage, Southeastern (.300 attack percentage) outhit the Islanders (.176 attack percentage).
In the second set, Southeastern (.231) again outhit A&M-Corpus Christi (.120). Down 19-16,
Tamra Grayson sparked a 9-1 Lady Lion run with a kill off an assist from
Becky Bekelja. During the run, freshman
Brooke Balser survived a pair of Islander timeouts to serve off four points.
The momentum carried over to the third set as the Lady Lions built a 21-16 lead, but a Tyger Holt kill jump started the A&M-Corpus Christi offense. Three consecutive kills by Haley Satterwhite tied the score, 21-21. Another Holt kill finished off the set.
Southeastern took a 13-11 lead in the fourth set, but then fell behind 19-15. The Lady Lions rallied behind the blocking of Devlin to tie the score, 24-24, and then take a one point lead. Kills by Logen Bourque and Satterwhite sealed the match for A&M-Corpus Christi.
Satterwhite recorded a match-high 18 kills for the Islanders and Shannon Hullum added 14 kills of her own. Bourque dished out 46 assists and contributed 10 digs, while Micah Nolan (23 digs) and Ivy Baresh (19 digs) led the A&M-Corpus Christi defensive effort.
Bekelja handed out 33 assists for the Lady Lions and contributed 12 digs to the defensive effort.
Morgan Todd (11 digs),
Lindsey Young (nine digs), Balser (eight digs),
Mikayla Shippy (five blocks) and Turk (four blocks) were also key to holding the Islanders to a .150 attack percentage for the match.
Southeastern steps outside of conference play Wednesday as it travels to Jackson State for a 7 p.m. match.
