Southeastern Heads to Alcorn State, Hosts USM

Lady Lions face Alcorn at 4 on Friday, welcome Golden Eagles on Sunday at 4

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team has two matches on tap this week, including the 2012 home opener on Sunday.
 
On Friday, the Lady Lions (0-1) head to Alcorn State (0-2) for a 4 p.m. match in Lorman, Miss. Southeastern opens its home schedule on Sunday, welcoming Southern Miss (0-0-1) for a 4 p.m. match at the Southeastern Soccer Complex. The first 100 students in attendance will receive free food from Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers. In addition, Southeastern Athletics will draw one lucky student to win $25 for every 25 students that attend the match.
 
Sunday's match will also be the first event in the Greek Challenge, which runs through October 27. The Greek organization that accumulates the highest total attendance at Southeastern home events from Aug. 26 – Oct. 27 will earn $1,000. Second prize is $500 and third place receives $250.
 
Southeastern opened 2012 with a hard-fought 2-1 loss at Mississippi State last Friday. Senior forward Maiya Cooper scored the Lady Lions' lone goal late in the first half. The goal was the Hawthorne, Calif. native's 38th of her career and moved her into a tie for second place on the school's career list.
 
On the defensive end, the Lady Lions held a tough Bulldog team to two goals. Making her first start in 21 months, Southeastern senior goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus was credited with 11 saves – two off her career high.
 
On Friday, Southeastern faces an Alcorn State team that opened the season with a 10-0 loss to Central Arkansas, followed by a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Troy. Alexandra MacCaulay leads the team with three shots, while Ashley Murray has handled the goalkeeping and heads into the weekend with a 7.50 goals against average.
 
Southeastern is 4-0 all-time versus Alcorn State. Last season, Southeastern picked up a 6-0 victory in the season opener. Sam McNally and Jaci Teresinski each had two goals in the win, while Lauren Stillians dished out a career-high three assists.
 
On Sunday, USM comes to town after playing Louisiana Tech on Friday morning. The Golden Eagles opened 2012 with a 1-1 tie at Mercer. Junior Chelsea Cruthirds scored USM's only goal, while junior Lindsey Schawner preserved the tie with seven saves.
 
Southeastern has a 0-6-1 record versus Southern Miss. Last season, Southeastern dropped a 3-1 decision in Hattiesburg behind a hat trick by Jordan Wagner.
 
Following this week's action, the Lady Lions head to Houston, Texas for a 1 p.m. match at Texas Southern.
