Lions Host Ragin' Cajuns In Mid-Week Tilt

Manuel to make first career start

Brock Hebert is third-leading hitter in the Southland Conference after his 7-for-11 performance on opening weekend.

HAMMOND – Coming off a season-opening sweep of Indiana State, the Southeastern Louisiana baseball team faces Louisiana-Lafayette Wednesday in its first mid-week contest of the 2012 season.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. Live statistics will be available at www.LionSports.net and in-game updates are available via Twitter by following @SLUathletics.

The Lions (3-0) used a combination of strong pitching and defense to dispatch Indiana State in all three games over the weekend. Southeastern won the opener, 7-2, and swept a doubleheader Sunday by scores of 3-1 and 6-5. The Lions hit .265 as team in the three-game series, committed just two errors and posted a 2.00 team ERA.

Against Indiana State, Brock Hebert paced Southeastern offensively. He was 7-for-11 (.636 average) at the plate with a pair of doubles and scored six runs. Hebert is third in the Southland Conference in batting average, on-base and slugging percentage, and tied for the most runs scored.

UL-Lafayette (1-2) opened its season in San Marcos, Texas, participating in Texas State's Bobcat Invitational. The Ragin' Cajuns shut out Wichita State, 1-0, Saturday before dropping games to Santa Clara, 8-5, and host Texas State, 9-5. Through the season's first three games ULL has a .263 team batting average and posted a 4.68 staff ERA.

The Ragin' Cajuns will send sophomore right-hander Caleb Kellogg to the mound Wednesday for the first time this season. In 2011, Kellogg appeared in 19 games, all in relief, and compiled a 1-0 record with five saves and a 3.86 ERA.

Southeastern will counter with junior right-hander Kaleb Manuel. A transfer from LSU-Eunice, Manuel worked 1.1 scoreless innings in relief for the Lions in Sunday's 3-1 win over Indiana State. The Mamou, La., native will be making his first career start for Southeastern.

The Lions will continue their season-opening, seven-game homestand Friday against Eastern Illinois.
