HAMMOND – Patience at the plate paid off for the Southeastern Louisiana baseball team Sunday as the Lions rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning to take the second game of a doubleheader from Indiana State, 6-5, and sweep the season-opening series.

“We have some new faces and the poise they showed today was impressive,” Artigues said. “When [Indiana State] scored three they didn't panic and our bullpen kept them at bay.”

The Lions (3-0) loaded the bases in the ninth, down 5-3, as Sycamore reliever Devin Moore walked three of the four batters he faced in the inning. Indiana State went to the bullpen for right-hander Chris Machado, but he hit shortstop Ben Hernandez with a pitch to force in a run.

With one out, Harry Slade pulled an 0-2 pitch from Machado into right field to score pinch runner Ryan Downing and Brock Hebert for the walk-off victory.

“The guys stuck with the game plan all weekend long,” Artigues said. “Our pitching was outstanding; it kept us in the game. Our defense was good for the most part and we had some really quality at bats. “

Indiana State (0-3) scored three runs in the top of the first inning to claim its first lead of the series. After Lion starting pitcher Buck Bernard recorded the first two outs, the Sycamores picked up a pair of singles from right fielder Robby Ort and catcher Jeremy Lucas. Bernard then walked back-to-back hitters, forcing in a run. A throwing error by third baseman Brett Hoffman on a fielder's choice allowed to a pair of runs to score.

Southeastern answered with a single run in the bottom of the first as Brock Hebert led off the inning with a single, one of his three hits in the ballgame. Hernandez then reached on an error by the Indiana State starting pitcher Ryan Torgerson. With one out Jonathan Pace drew a walk to load the bases and right fielder Cody Gougler plated the run with a sacrifice fly.

The Sycamores added single runs in the third and fourth innings while Southeastern would add single runs in the third and sixth innings.

Reliever Dylan Hills (1-0) picked up the win for the Lions with two shutout innings of relief work and Moore (0-1) took the loss for Indiana State.

Game One – Southeastern 3, Indiana State 1

The Lions jumped on top first with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Hebert led off the inning with a double to right-center field and moved to third on sacrifice bunt by Hernandez. Slade followed up with a single to left-center to plate Hebert.

Indiana State answered with a solo home run in the top of the second.

Southeastern took the lead back with single runs in the fifth and sixth.

In the fifth, left fielder Ladd Rhodes was hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to second on a Jacob Fisher sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch moved Rhodes to third and he scored on a Hoffman sacrifice fly.

Brock Hebert led off the sixth with his second double of the game and moved to third on another Hernandez sac bunt. Slade plated Hebert, once again, but this time on fielder's choice.

Starting pitcher Jordan Hymel (1-0) picked up the win for the Lions and Indiana State starter Sean Manaea (0-1) was saddled with the loss. Stefan Lopez picked up his first save of the season.
