TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama opened the game on an 11-2 run and never looked back on the way to a 97-62 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in non-conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Foster Auditorium.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Lady Lions (3-2). Alabama (5-0) had five players in double figures and scored 34 points off a season-high 31 turnovers for Southeastern.
The Lady Lions finished with two players in double figures. Junior forward
Aja Gibson finished 7-for-11 from the floor for a game-high 14 points, while junior guard
Jameika Hoskins added 12 points.
Sophomore guard
Elizabeth Styles fell just short of double figures with nine points and led Southeastern with four assists. The Lady Lions were out-rebounded, 38-34. Freshman forward
Nanna Pool pulled down a team-high six rebounds, while Gibson and senior forward
Brandi Simmons had five boards apiece.
Alabama was led by Jasmine Robinson's 14 points. Robinson was joined in double figures by Kaneisha Horn (13 points), Meghan Perkins (13 points), Alicia Mitcham (11 points) and Daisha Simmons (10 points). Simmons also led Alabama with eight assists, while Perkins pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go with her seven steals.
Gibson knocked down the game's first basket before Alabama ran off 11 straight points. Southeastern could never get anything going against the unbeaten Crimson Tide, as Alabama went into the break with a 51-23 advantage.
Southeastern was crisper on offense in the second half, shooting 50 percent (15-for-30) from the floor after the break. However, the Lady Lions could get no closer than 25 rhe rest of the way.
On Thursday, the Lady Lions will be in New Orleans to face future league opponent UNO at 5 p.m. in Lakefront Arena. Thursday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at LionSports.net.
