HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will look to extend its three-game winning streak on Sunday, when it travels to face Alabama at 2 p.m. in Foster Auditorium.
The game between the Lady Lions (3-1) and the host Crimson Tide (4-0) will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at LionSports.net. Live stats will also be available at rolltide.com.
Southeastern extended its winning streak on Tuesday with a 91-69 win over William Carey. The Lady Lions finished with a dominant 53-27 rebounding margin behind double-double efforts by senior forward
Brandi Simmons (11 points, 12 rebounds) and freshman forward
Nanna Pool (12 points, 13 rebounds). Senior guard
Cierra Morris and junior forward
Aja Gibson helped the Southeastern rebounding efforts with eight and seven boards, respectively.
For the second straight game, Southeastern had five players score in double figures. Simmons and Pool were joined by Gibson (18 points), sophomore guard
Symone Miller (17 points) and freshman guard
Erica Hernandez (11 points). Miller and Simmons were also the team's top distributors with four assists apiece.
The 91 points scored on Tuesday were the most by the Lady Lions since the 2009-10 season. Buoyed by that effort, Southeastern leads the Southland Conference with 81.2 points per game. Simmons leads the team with 14.0 points per game and is joined in double figures by Pool (11.3 ppg) and Gibson (10.0 ppg).
In total, Southeastern features six of the top 22 scores in the league, as Miller (9.8 ppg), sophomore guard
Elizabeth Styles (9.8 ppg) and junior guard
Jameika Hoskins (9.5 ppg) are just under double figures. Simmons also leads the league with 60 percent shooting from the field, while Styles is fifth in the Southland with 3.8 assists per game.
After Tuesday's performance on the boards, Southeastern is averaging 49.2 rebounds per contest and is out-rebounding foes by nearly eight rebounds per contest. Simmons is second in the Southland with 12.0 rebounds per game and is joined in the top five by Pool and her 8.3 rebounds per contest. Hoskins has also been effective on the glass, averaging 5.3 boards per outing to put her just outside of the league's top 20.
Defensively, opponents are scoring 67.8 points per game against the Lady Lions, who are forcing 25.8 turnovers per contest. Simmons and Styles share the team lead with six steals. Freshman guard
Cortney Epting has blocked a team-high three shots.
Southeastern will be looking to hand Alabama its first loss of the 2012-13 campaign. Alabama went into the Thanksgiving break with an 88-83 triple overtime victory over North Texas. In the win, three Tide players posted double-doubles. Junior guard Jasmine Robinson (26 points, 13 rebounds), sophomore forward Kaneisha Horn (15 points, 11 rebounds) and sophomore guard Daisha Simmons (14 points, 11 rebounds) were joined in double figures by junior guard Shafontaye Myers (22 points).
On the way to four straight wins to open the season, Alabama has averaged 82.5 points per contest. The Crimson Tide features four players with double-digit scoring averages. Myers leads the way with 17.8 points per game, followed by Robinson (15.5 ppg), Simmons (12.5 ppg) and Horn (10.8 ppg). Simmons is also averaging a team-high 3.8 assists per contest.
Alabama is averaging 53.2 rebounds per contest, but opponents are out-rebounding the Crimson Tide by a rebound per game. Horn leads the team with 6.8 boards per outing, followed closely by senior forward Robinson (6.5 rpg), senior forward Alicia Mitcham (6.3 rpg) and Simmons (6.0 rpg).
Opponents are scoring 65.0 points per game versus Alabama, which is forcing 33.2 turnovers per game. Simmons has been the team's top defender, averaging 4.3 steals and 1.5 blocks per contest.
The Lady Lions are 2-7 all-time versus Alabama. Though the Crimson Tide has won the last six meetings in the past seven seasons, all the games have been very competitive. Last season, Alabama scored 21 points off 17 Southeastern turnovers in a 69-56 win, despite a 15-point, 11-rebound effort by Simmons.
Southeastern will play the next three games away from home starting with Sunday's contest. On Thursday, the Lady Lions will be in New Orleans to face future league opponent UNO at 5 p.m. in Lakefront Arena. Thursday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at LionSports.net.
