HAMMOND – Antonnio Benton and
Jeremy Campbell combined to score 30 points on 13 of 16 shooting and Southeastern Louisiana used a 17-2 run midway through the second half to pull away and defeat Louisiana College, 91-49, on Tuesday at the University Center.
Roosevelt Johnson and
Jeffery Ricard added 12 points each as Southeastern (1-3) won its 31st consecutive non-conference game at home under head coach Jim Yarbrough while improving to 36-2 at home in non-conference game since 2005-06.
Benton, who grabbed 11 rebounds for his second career double-double, was perfect from the floor going 7-for-7 while tying a career-high with three steals. Campbell, Benton's high school teammate at Oak Grove (Miss.) High went 6-for-9 from the floor as the Lions outscored the Division III Wildcats (0-1), 47-26, in the second half.
Louisiana College trailed 44-23 at halftime before cutting the lead to 48-36 on a steal and layup by Doc Welch with 14:20 remaining in the game. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get as Campbell would score the next six points for Southeastern before consecutive steal-and-dunks by Johnson and Benton, respectively gave the Lions a 58-36 lead.
After a bucket by Phillip George cut the lead to 58-38, Southeastern answered with a 7-0 run as
Onochie Ochie connected on a short jumper, Ricard scored on a steal and layup and Ochie buried a 3-pointer for a 65-38 lead with 9:43 left.
Southeastern, which shot a season-high 59 percent (37-for-63) from the floor, never trailed as it opened the game with a 28-9 run that was capped by a free throw by
Jamaal James at the 9:08 mark. A putback by Benton off a missed 3-pointer by Ricard gave the Lions a 38-17 lead with 3:46 remaining before the teams traded buckets for the remainder of the half.
Welch and Anthony Gaines scored 10 points each to lead Louisiana College while Derrick Gardner grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
Southeastern will return to action on Nov. 28 when it visits Louisiana Tech in a 7 p.m. contest at the Thomas Assembly Center.
