Southeastern Blanks ORU, 2-0, for Third Straight Shutout Victory

McWhirter, Babcock, Bockhaus help Lady Lions keep rolling

Box Score

TULSA, Okla. – Goals by senior Kerry McWhirter and sophomore Jen Babcock sent the Southeastern Louisiana soccer team to a 2-0 Southland Conference road victory over Oral Roberts Sunday afternoon at the Case Soccer Complex.

The shutout victory was the third in a row for the Lady Lions (10-6-1, 4-2-1 Southland) and allowed Southeastern to jump Oral Roberts (10-6-2, 4-3 Southland) in the league standings. The win gave the Lady Lions their sixth straight season of double-digit goals and assured the team of its fifth straight winning record in league play. Southeastern will be no lower than the fifth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, set for Nov. 1-4 in Lake Charles.

McWhirter's goal was her fourth of the season, while Babcock put in her third score of the year. Freshman Kayla Vera was credited with her team-high sixth assist of the season on Babcock's goal.

Southeastern senior goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus earned her eighth shutout of the season, finishing with a match-high seven saves. After allowing seven goals in the first two league matches, Southeastern has allowed just one goal in its last five matches – a stretch that includes four shutouts. Bockhaus' shutout was the Southland Conference record 38th of her career and she is third in school history with 300 career saves.

Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle was impressed with his team's performance in the hard-fought road win.

“This was a very good win on the road against a tough Oral Roberts team,” Hornbuckle commented. “We again were very pleased with the defensive effort. This was a great team victory and we did a nice job of staying connected.

“Kerry scored a fantastic goal and Jen was a great presence for us on the right flank,” Hornbuckle added. “Lacey made some key saves for us early that set the tone for the match. Cheyenne Maxwell and Shanyce Shaw were difference makers for us in the back today.”

McWhirter used her strong leg to give Southeastern the lead for good in the 24th minute. The Olathe, Kan. native ripped a shot past ORU goalkeeper Helen Erb from 35 yards out to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 advantage.

Babcock doubled the Southeastern advantage less than four minutes into the second half. After a corner kick, the Canton, Mich. native found the net off a Vera feed to push Southeastern ahead, 2-0.

From there, Bockhaus and the Lady Lion defense kept the Golden Eagles at bay. Though ORU was credited with 25 shots, only seven were on goal.

Southeastern will close out the regular season on Friday, hosting Northwestern State at 3 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex. McWhirter, Bockhaus, Maiya Cooper, Karly Dagys, Lauren Stillians, Megan Miller, Sam McNally, Cassie Northrup, Kailey Mills, Tabitha McReynolds and Dana Songe will be honored prior to Friday's match in a Senior Day ceremony.
