HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana seniors
Megan Miller and
Sam McNally each scored goals to lead the Lady Lion soccer team to a 2-0 Southland Conference victory over Central Arkansas Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
The shutout victory was the second straight for the Lady Lions (9-6-1, 3-2-1 SLC). The Southeastern back line of junior
Shanyce Shaw, sophomore
Chelsea Villaescusa, freshman
Cheyenne Maxwell and junior
Nelly Traore held high-scoring UCA (9-6-1, 1-4-1 SLC) to just six shots.
Senior goalkeeper
Lacey Bockhaus made three saves in the win. The shutout was her seventh of the season and ran her Southland Conference career record total to 37. Miller and senior
Kailey Mills were each credited with assists for the Lady Lions.
Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle applauded his team's effort in the key victory, which greatly enhances the Lady Lions' chances to advance to next month's Southland Conference Tournament.
“This was a total team effort,” Hornbuckle commented. “We had great production from our bench with both Sam and Megan finishing great opportunities.
Lauren Stillians,
Kelsey Salcido and
Jaci Teresinski provided us with excellent play in the midfield. We did a great job pressuring up top and our back line did a nice job limiting UCA's opportunities.
Neither team could get much going offensively in the opening minutes of the match. Southeastern's best early opportunity came midway through the opening half. Senior
Kerry McWhirter made a strong run down the left flank and drew UCA goalkeeper Kelsey Gochnauer out of the box. McWhirter played a ball into sophomore
Jen Babcock, who saw her shot ricochet off the right post.
Southeastern finally broke through in the 38
th minute. Mills won a ball about 30 yards from her goal and played a perfect ball towards the net. A charging Miller got a foot on it, tucking the shot inside the near post to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
McNally would provide the dagger 27 minutes into the second half. Miller played a ball towards the UCA net and it was a footrace between McNally and UCA goalkeeper Lyndzey Goff. McNally was able to get just enough on her shot to knock it from Goff's grasp and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
From there, the Southeastern defense clamped down. UCA could not get back into the match, attempting just two shots the rest of the way.
The Lady Lions will close out the road portion of their regular season schedule next Sunday, when they travel to Oral Roberts for a 1 p.m. league match in Tulsa, Okla.
