Southeastern looks to close four-match road swing on a high note

Kelsey Salcido and the Lady Lions return to the road this week
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team will close out its four-match road swing this week with a pair of road non-conference matches.

The Lady Lions (2-1-1) will open the week at former Southland Conference rival Louisiana-Monroe (3-2-1) on Friday at 4 p.m. Live stats for Friday's match will be available at www.ulmwarhawks.com. On Sunday, Southeastern heads to Mississippi Valley State (0-1-1) for a 1 p.m. match in Itta Bena, Miss.

Southeastern will be looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season – a 3-1 defeat at Southern Miss. The Lady Lions took an early lead on a USM own goal in the opening minutes, but USM junior Jordan Wagner countered with a hat trick to push the Golden Eagles past the visiting Lady Lions.

Southeastern has used a balanced attack through the first four matches, as six players have accounted for the team's 12 goals. Sophomore Jaci Teresinski and junior Megan Miller share the team lead with three goals each. Junior Sam McNally has two goals, while juniors Maiya Cooper, Karly Dagys and Kerry McWhirter have one goal apiece.

Junior Lauren Stillians leads the Southland Conference with five assists. Dagys has also been a key distributor with three assists on the year.

The preseason first team All-Southland duo of Cooper and Dagys are both climbing the Southeastern career ranks in multiple categories. Cooper is currently fifth in school history with 26 goals and eighth with 60 points in her two-plus seasons in Hammond. Dagys, who ranks among the program's career leaders in assists (16, 10th) and shots (127, 8th), needs one point and four goals to crack the top 10 in those categories. Cooper and Dagys are also tied for sixth with six career game-winning goals.

While the Lady Lion offense has been productive, Southeastern has limited its opponents' scoring opportunities. The Southeastern defensive backfield of McWhirter, senior Kyle MacIntosh, sophomore Shanyce Shaw and freshman Jennifer Marzi has combined to hold opponents to four goals on the year. Junior Cassie Northrup has handled all the work in the net this season and has a 0.95 goals against average and two shutouts.

After a 3-2 win at Centenary on Wednesday, Louisiana-Monroe has already surpassed its win total from a season ago. Freshman Taylor Bonetti led ULM to the win with two goals.

Southeastern will be the fifth Southland Conference school ULM has faced this season. The Warhawks lost to Northwestern State and McNeese State, tied Nicholls and defeated Central Arkansas. Freshman Alyssa Wooden leads the team with four goals, followed by Bonetti with three goals. Sophomore Hannah Linzay has handled all the goalkeeping duties and enters Friday's match with a 1.77 goals against average.

Southeastern and Louisiana-Monroe will be meeting for the 21st time in history on Friday with the Lady Lions holding a 10-6-2 advantage. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie last season with Teresinski accounting for Southeastern's lone goal.

No individual statistics are available for Mississippi Valley State. Southeastern has won the two previous meetings between the two schools. Last season, the Lady Lions opened the season with a 2-0 win over the Delta Devilettes behind goals from McWhirter and Tabitha McReynolds.

Following this week's matches, Southeastern will return home to host Texas Southern for a 4:30 p.m. match at the Southeastern Soccer Complex on Fri., Sept. 16.
