Box Score HAMMOND – Behind one of the most prolific offensive performances in school history, the Southeastern Louisiana football team rolled past Savannah State, 63-6, in its home opener Saturday night in Strawberry Stadium.
The Lions (1-1) rolled up 547 yards of total offense and 63 points – the fifth-highest single-game total in school history. Defensively, Southeastern limited Savannah State (0-2) to 211 total yards and 11 first downs.
Southeastern led 7-3 after the first quarter, but broke the game open with a 35-point outburst in the second quarter to take a 42-6 lead. After punting on the second drive of the game, Southeastern scored touchdowns on six consecutive possessions on the way to a 49-6 advantage early in the third quarter.
Juniors
Brian Young and
Nathan Stanley again split time under center for the Lions and both were effective. Young completed 15 of 25 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown, while Stanley connected on 11 of his 15 attempts for 116 yards and two scores.
Senior
Brandon Collins led the Lion receivers with six catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Senior
Simmie Yarborough also caught a touchdown pass for Southeastern – his school-record 28th scoring grab of his career. In all 11 different Lions finished with a reception.
Southeastern also finished with 270 rushing yards, led by junior
Zeke Jones and his career-high tying three touchdown runs. Freshman
Jordan Wells had a team-high 62 rushing yards, as he and junior
Michael Chaney each scored their first career touchdowns.
Southeastern limited Savannah State to two first half field goals by Derek Williams. Senior
Keiron Jones had an interception for the Lions, while senior
Avery Crooks led Southeastern with six tackles and was one of eight Lions to record tackles for loss. Junior
Mairo Stovall recorded his first career sack for Southeastern.
Savannah State quarterback Alfred Defilipps was limited to 68 passing yards on 8-for-21 passing. Justin Babb led SSU with 33 yards on 13 carries. Simon Heyward and Dylan Cook each had three receptions for the Tigers, while Darren Hunter led the defense with 11 tackles.
Southeastern will return to the road on Saturday, facing Southern Miss at 6 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
