LAFAYETTE – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore
Jaci Teresinski scored in the 84th minute to help the Lady Lion women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie with non-conference and in-state foe Louisiana-Lafayette Friday night at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
Southeastern (2-0-1) remained unbeaten with the draw in its 2011 road opener. Louisiana-Lafayette ran its record to 1-1-1.
Lady Lion junior goalkeeper
Cassie Northrup allowed her first goal in a Southeastern uniform, but also finished with a career-high eight saves. Teresinski and junior
Maiya Cooper had three shots apiece for Southeastern.
“We did a great job of creating opportunities, but couldn't quite get that finishing score to put the match away,” Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle commented. “We had several shots hit the post.
Karly Dagys, in particular, hit a shot off the post that was inches away from being the game-winner.”
Hornbuckle singled out several individuals for their performances on Friday.
“
Lauren Stillians and
Kelsey Salcido were dynamite in the midfield for us tonight,” Hornbuckle commented. “Jaci showed great poise on the tying goal. We've been working on creating pressure all week in training and it was rewarding to see that hard work pay off. We were extremely pleased with the efforts of Cassie in goal. She came up huge with several key saves that kept the momentum in our favor.”
The two teams battled to a standstill in the opening half. Cooper and Dagys each had shots hit the post in the first 45 minutes, while Northrup recorded three saves for the Lady Lions.
Both teams came out shooting to start the second half, as Northrup was required to corral two more shots in the opening minutes. In the 59th minute, Cooper again had tough luck, firing another shot off the post.
Louisiana-Lafayette finally broke through in the 61st minute. Freshman Grace Howell-Harries played a ball ahead to junior Cayla Chatman, who sent a cross deep into the box that sophomore Shelby Isley knocked past Northrup from close range. Isley's first score of the season gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 1-0 lead.
Teresinski brought Southeastern even with just under seven minutes left in regulation. Teresinski fired a shot that ULL junior goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield turned away, but the Chandler, Ariz. native finished the deflection to knot the score. The goal was Teresinski's third of the season, tying her with junior
Megan Miller for the team lead.
ULL was on the offensive in the first overtime, as Howell-Harries had a shot hit the post three minutes in. Southeastern was more aggressive in the second overtime, as junior
Sam McNally had two corner kicks and freshman
Jen Babcock had a shot sail just high. Northrup stopped two shots from the Ragin' Cajuns in the final minutes to preserve the tie.
Southeastern will return to action next Friday, Sept. 2, facing Southern Miss at 4 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss. to continue a four-match road swing.
