Former Lion Hugo Leon Claims First Victory On Canadian Tour

Leon claims ATB Financial Classic by one stroke in blustery conditions

Former Lion Hugo Leon shot 13-under-par 271 for the 72-hole tournament
CALGARY, Alberta – Former Southeastern Louisiana University golfer Hugo Leon claimed his first professional victory on the Canadian Tour on Sunday when he captured the ATB Financial Classic with a one-stoke victory at Bearspaw Country Club.

Leon, a four-year letterwinner for the Lions from 2003-07, fired a 13-under-par 271 for the week in edging Jose Rodriguez of Mexico in the final round that was played in blustery conditions. Leon, who opened the tournament with rounds of 66, 68 and 66, fired an even-par 71 in the final round to post his second top 10 finish in six events on the year.

“Fortunately I live in Florida and play in very windy conditions all the time,” said Leon in a release on CanTour.com. “From experience I know that if I hit a good shot the wind doesn't really matter and that's what we tried to focus on today.”

Leon earned $32,000 for the victory and now sits in second place on the Canadian Tour Order of Merit. The 26-year old native of Chile has made the cut in all six tournaments he has played in 2011.

In his career at Southeastern, Leon was a three-time All-Southland Conference performer and recorded a 74.39 stroke average in his career and ranks seventh in school history in career rounds played (114). The 2006 Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar captured team medalist honors as a sophomore with a 74.6 scoring average and was named to the SLC All-Academic squad in 2007.
