Southeastern Places 88 on Southland Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll

Southeastern has league-high 165 Academic Honor Roll selections in 2010-11

Southeastern all-time hits leader Cass Hargis was among the university's 88 student-athletes selected to the Spring Academic Honor Roll
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University placed 88 student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll, which was announced by the league office on Thursday.

Southeastern's total was the second-highest in the Southland behind Texas State's 101 members. The 932 student-athletes named to the Spring Honor Roll matches last year's record for the longest honor roll in school history.

The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA for the semester in which the student-athlete's championship is held. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.

The announcement of the Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll capped an impressive 2010-11 year for Southeastern student-athletes in the classroom. Coupled with the 77 honorees in the fall, Southeastern placed 165 student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll – more than any other league institution.

For the second straight year, Southeastern had more student-athletes named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year, as Cedric Scotto (men's golf), Henry Rop (men's cross country) and Kyle MacIntosh (women's soccer) were honored in their respective sports. Southeastern also had more Academic All-Americans than any other Southland school, as Katie Duhe (softball) and Josh Cryer (baseball) both earned those accolades.

Both the Southeastern baseball and softball teams had more Spring Honor Roll members than any other Southland Conference school in those sports. Cryer was one of 24 representatives from head baseball coach Jay Artigues' squad, along with Louisiana Pitcher of the Year Tyler Watkins and Justin Boudreaux, a 14th-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Major League Baseball draft earlier this month.

Under the direction of head coach Pete Langlois, the Southeastern softball team had 15 student-athletes on the Spring Honor Roll. Duhe was joined on the list by fellow starters Meghan Gomez, Tamra Ladnier, Katie Matthews and Megan McCollum.

Sean Brady's track and field team had 30 representatives on the list. All-American Kovey Simmons and two-time Southland Conference Men's Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Year Rop highlighted the 14 Lions selected. An All-Southland honoree in the pole vault, Brittany Pfantz was among the 16 Lady Lions recognized.

The Southeastern women's basketball team had seven players on the Spring Honor Roll. Leading scorer Kelli Jenkins was among a group that included fellow starters Mary Fountain, Rachel Mackie and Chelsea Hix.

The men's golf, men's basketball and women's tennis teams all placed four student-athletes on the list. Highlighting that group was Scotto, who became the first men's golfer in league history to earn Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honors three times.
