Lions, Bearkats To Square Off In Southland Hoops

First meeting between schools since semifinals of Southland Tournament

Brandon Fortenberry is second in scoring for Southeastern at 10.7 points per game
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Coming off a dramatic last-second victory at Lamar on Wednesday, the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to action when it visits defending Southland Conference champion Sam Houston State at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionsSports.net. The game marks the first between the schools since SHSU (10-10, 3-4 Southland) claimed an 88-85 victory in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament.

Southeastern (10-9, 4-3 Southland) won its first league game on the road in four contests this season after edging Lamar, 89-87, on a tip-in bucket by Gary Dixon at the buzzer. Dixon's game-winner – his only basket of the game – came after Trent Hutchin missed a 15-foot jumper. Hutchin tied a career-high with 32 points in the game, hitting a career high eight 3-pointers and helping Southeastern shoot 55 percent from the floor.

Hutchin leads Southeastern in scoring at 15.5 points per game followed by Brandon Fortenberry (10.7) and David Ndoumba (10.3). Ndoumba, who is second in the Southland Conference with 38 blocked shots, leads Southeastern with 7.5 rebounds per game.

Dixon (9.3), Deshawn Patterson (6.6), Rodney Jones (6.1), Roosevelt Johnson (5.4) and Jason Marks (5.1) are next in scoring for Southeastern, which averages 71.1 points per game and has averaged 91.0 in its last two games.

SHSU is led in scoring by Gilberto Clavell – the Southland Conference's second-leading scorer – at 20.0 points per game. Clavell has scored in double figures in 19 of the Bearkats' 20 games this season including five performances of 20 points or better.

Clavell is only 38 points away from becoming the first junior college transfer to total 1,000 career points in his two years of NCAA Division I competition at SHSU. Josten Crow also is averaging in double figures at 13.1 points.

The Bearkats return to action after posting an 88-67 win over UTSA last Saturday. Lance Pevehouse scored a game-high 23 points to help SHSU snap a three-game losing streak.
