HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday when it plays host to Southland Conference East Division rival Lamar in the University Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the internet at www.LionSports.net The game will also be televised on a tape-delayed basis on the Southeastern Channel (Charter Cable 18 in Tangipahoa/St. Tammany/St. Helena/Livingston Parish and Charter Cable 17 in Washington Parish). Winners of four of its last five games, Southeastern (12-10, 6-4 Southland) looks to maintain its momentum as it sits one game behind league leaders McNeese State and Texas State. The Lions have won their last 13 games at home dating back to the 2009-10 season and are 21-1 at home in the last two seasons.
Southeastern kept up its success of knocking off divisional leaders as it posted a 76-68 win at Northwestern State last Saturday. The win was the fourth by the Lions against a divisional leader this season that included wins over home wins over McNeese State (Jan. 19), Northwestern State (Jan. 29) and UTSA (Feb. 9).
Brandon Fortenberry, who was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week on Monday, scored a career-high 30 points against the Demons – the fourth 30-point performance by a Lion this season – while dishing out nine assists.
Trent Hutchin added 16 points for the Lions while
Gary Dixon added 12 off the bench.
Hutchin, who has three 30-point games this season for the Lions, leads the team in scoring at 16.5 points with Fortenberry (11.8) and
David Ndoumba (10.0) the other players averaging in double figures. Dixon, Southeastern's top threat off the bench, is next in scoring at 9.2 points per game followed by
Deshawn Patterson (6.0),
Roosevelt Johnson (5.6),
Jason Marks (5.1) and
Rodney Jones (4.9).
Lamar (10-14, 4-6 Southland) snapped a five-game losing streak with an 84-71 victory over Nicholls on Saturday. Devon Lamb, a 6-foot-2 guard, notched his seventh double-double of the season for the Cardinals with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Donley Minor recorded a career-high 18 points.
Mike James, who has been Lamar's top reserve, leads the Cardinals in scoring at 12.5 points per game. Anthony Miles (11.3), Kendrick Harris (11.2), Lamb (10.0), Brandon Davis (8.8) and Charlie Harper (8.6) help pace the Southland's top offensive unit which averages 84.6 points per game.
Southeastern has won the last two meetings in the series and three straight in Hammond. The Lions edged Lamar in the previous meeting between the schools, 89-87, on Feb. 2 as a tip-in by Dixon at the buzzer provided the winning margin.
After facing Lamar, Southeastern will remain at home as it hosts UT Arlington on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be the Lions' Basketball Alumni Reunion Game with a pre-game reception starting at 2 p.m. in the St. Tammany Room at the University Center.
