HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday when it plays host to Southland Conference East Division leader McNeese State in the annual “Jam the Jungle” game at the University Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the internet only at www.LionSports.net.
The game will also be streamed live on the internet at www.LionSports.net and will be televised on a tape-delayed basis on the Southeastern Channel (Charter Cable 18 in Tangipahoa/St. Tammany/St. Helena Parish and Charter Cable 17 in Livingston/Washington Parish).
With classes beginning for the spring semester on Tuesday, Southeastern (7-7, 1-1 Southland) will play its first game with students on campus since Dec. 1. The game is being sponsored by the Southeastern Campus Activities Board and Student Government Association with Southeastern students having the chance to participate in the $10,000 Shoot Out, which is sponsored by the Division for Student Affairs & Division of Auxiliary Services.
Free food and t-shirts, while they last, will be available for Southeastern students.
Southeastern, which was picked to finish first in the SLC East by the league's Sports Information Directors and second by the league's coaches, dropped a 62-59 decision at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday as Horace Bond drained a 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining to snap a 57-57 deadlock. Hollis Hill added a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the win for the Islanders, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Southeastern's
Trent Hutchin scored a game-high 18 points for Southeastern after going 6-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-8 from behind the 3-point line.
David Ndoumba added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Lions, who forced 16 turnovers but went 5-for-11 from the free throw line.
Hutchin leads Southeastern in scoring at 15.1 points per game while shooting 41 percent from behind the 3-point line and a league-best 31-for-34 (.912 percent) from the free throw line. Ndoumba, the team's leading rebounder at 6.9 boards per game, is next in scoring for Southeastern at 10.7 points followed by
Brandon Fortenberry (10.6) and
Gary Dixon (10.1).
Rodney Jones (6.6),
Roosevelt Johnson (6.4),
Deshawn Patterson (4.9) and
Jason Marks (4.7) are next in scoring for Southeastern, which averages 69.9 points per game while allowing 68.0.
McNeese State (11-5, 3-0 Southland), off to its best start since 1985-86, is one of three teams in the Southland Conference with 10 more wins (11 by Stephen F. Austin, 10 by Northwestern State) and has won its last three games in staking an early lead in the SLC East. The Cowboys defeated Texas State in their last contest, 97-92, after opening with wins over A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar.
The Cowboys, who are fourth in the Southland Conference in scoring offense (75.4), are led by Patrick Richard who is fifth in the league in scoring at 15.3 points per game. Diego Kapelan (13.8), Stephan Martin (11.9) and P.J. Alawoya (9.1) are next in scoring for McNeese State with Alawoya pulling down 9.5 rebounds per game.
After facing McNeese State, Southeastern will return to Southland Conference action on Saturday when it travels to Thibodaux to face Nicholls State in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Stopher Gym.
