Southeastern Falls to Hot-Hitting Lamar in Southland Conference Action

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana senior Allison Jones recorded a team-high seven kills, but Lamar posted a blistering .350 hitting percentage to send the Lady Lions to a 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 loss in Southland Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the University Center.

Southeastern dropped to 9-10 overall and 1-2 in Southland Conference play. Lamar ran its record to 6-8 overall with a 2-1 Southland record.

Jones led the Lion offensive attack, along with sophomore Taylor Buckner who posted six kills. Junior Arianne Cruckshank continued her climb up the school's career assist leaderboard, as her 18 assists moved her past Chelsea Cude into sixth place in school history with 1,219 career assists. Junior Paige Dollison added two service aces for Southeastern.

Defensively, junior Chelsea Barr led the Lady Lions with six digs. Crushank added five digs and a team-high three block assists. Sophomore Courtney Donald added two blocks, while Jones, freshman Kinsey Williams and freshman Rhiannon Cheeks also recorded blocks for the Lady Lions.

Lamar did not have a single player with double-digit kills, but used a balanced attack on the way to the win. Tina Hobbs led the Lady Cardinals with nine kills, while Sierra Whitaker added eight and both Megan McStravik and Jayme Bazile tallied seven kills apiece. Setter Alex Morford contributed a match-high 34 assists for Lamar.

Bailey Smith led Lamar with nine digs, while Morford was credited with eight digs and a solo block. Hobbs led the LU defensive effort with four block assists.

Lamar hit .440 to take the opening set, 25-13. Hobbs had five kills in the set and the Lady Cardinals held Southeastern to a .077 hitting percentage.

Lamar scored the first seven points of a second set that it won, 25-19. Southeastern rallied to cut the deficit as close as 21-19 thanks to a run that featured a Dollison service ace, a kill by freshman Monica Raymond and several Lamar errors. However, Lamar closed out the set with four straight points and took a 2-0 lead after an ace by Morford.

In the third set, Lamar hit .414 to close out the match with a 25-18 victory. Southeastern again fell in an early hole, falling behind, 14-6. A service ace by Buckner pulled Southeastern as close as 19-14, but the Lady Lions could get no closer. A kill by Whitaker closed out the match.

Southeastern will be back in action on Thursday, facing league foe Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
