Lady Lions Drop Two at Nicholls Challenge

Southeastern returns home on Thursday at 7 p.m. to host Southland foe McNeese State

Sophomore Taylor Buckner and the Lady Lions ended a stretch of five matches in five days on Saturday.

THIBODAUX – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team fell to non-conference foes Houston and Louisiana Tech in day two of the Nicholls Challenge Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium.

Southeastern (8-9) opened the day with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-15 loss to Louisiana Tech (8-5) in a match that saw 3 ties and 11 lead changes. Houston (6-6) took down Southeastern, 25-16, 25-13, 25-16 in the nightcap.

Senior Allison Jones and freshman Kinsey Williams paced the Southeastern attack with six kills in the loss to Louisiana Tech. Williams was particularly impressive, finishing the match with a .545 hitting percentage. Freshman Lindsey Young led the way with 20 assists for the Lady Lions.

Junior Chelsea Barr topped Southeastern with 14 digs in the day's opening match. Jones, sophomore Courtney Donald and freshman Rhiannon Cheeks each finished with two blocks.

However, Southeastern was unable to overcome a .257 hitting percentage from Louisiana Tech. Kara Jones and Taylor Fritz had 14 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Techsters. Bianca Bin added a match-high 35 assists and Lori Hunsucker recorded 15 digs.

In the nightcap, sophomores Taylor Buckner and Donald finished with five and four kills, respectively, to lead the Lady Lions. Junior Arianne Cruckshank took over setting duties and was credited with 15 assists.

Defensively, Barr and freshman Monica Raymond were credited with 10 digs apiece. Williams led Southeastern with two blocks in the nightcap.

Much like the first match of the day, Southeastern was again victimized by a hot-hitting opponent, as UH hit .330 for the match. Chandace Tryon led the Cougars with 13 kills and a .750 hitting percentage. Amber Brooks notched 39 assists, while Amanda Carson contributed 13 digs.

Southeastern will have a few days off, before returning home to open its Southland Conference home schedule on Thursday versus McNeese State at 7 p.m.
