Southeastern Set To Renew Rivalry With Lamar

First meeting between the schools since 1969

Zeke Jones has averaged 5.8 yards per carry in his first two games.
HAMMOND – After posting a victory in its home opener last week, Southeastern Louisiana University returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to re-instated FCS program Lamar at Strawberry Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), in the New Orleans area on WGSO-AM (990) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. The game is also being televised on a tape-delayed basis on the Southeastern Channel (Charter Cable 18 in Tangipahoa/St. Tammany Parish; Channel 17 in Livingtson and Washington Parish).

The meeting between Southeastern (1-1) and Lamar (1-1) is also the annual Hall of Fame game with former Lion student-athletes Sarah Gascon (Volleyball/Softball), Bobby Hill (Football) and Andy Smith (Golf) being introduced at halftime.

Southeastern forced five turnovers and made four stops on downs – including two inside the SLU 20 – as the Lions held off Ohio Valley Conference member UT Martin, 24-10. The win improved Southeastern's record in home openers to 8-0 since re-instating the program in 2003.

Zeke Jones and Sam Fairley each rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown as Southeastern gained 247 yards on the ground. Former Hahnville product Brian Young completed 18 of 38 passes for 148 yards, completing six passes each to Simmie Yarborough and Brandon Collins.

Mark Newbill recorded 14 tackles to lead Southeastern while Tommy Connors added eight stops with a pair of interceptions. Connors' 12-yard TD with 4:20 remaining sealed the win for the Lions, who built a 17-0 halftime lead before UTM closed the gap to 17-10 in the third quarter.

Jones has gained 169 yards in his first two games in 2010 for the Lions while Fairley has added 130. Yarborough, who is second in school history with 19 touchdown receptions, leads Southeastern with 12 receptions on the season with Collins (7) and Kory Theodore (5) next.

Defensively, Newbill has recorded 25 tackles in his first two games followed by Connors (15), Nathan Clophus (12), Ryan Godare (12) and Jerome Wright (12).

Lamar, which dropped its program after the 1989 season, won its first game of the season with a 21-14 victory over Webber (Fla.) International before an overflow crowd of 16,600 at Provost Humphrey Stadium.

Andre Bevil, who passed for a school-record 429 yards in the Cardinals' opener on Sept. 4 at McNeese State, threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns against WIU.

The junior has thrown for 657 yards in his first two games in a Lamar uniform with six touchdowns and three interceptions. J.J. Hayes has caught a team-high 13 passes to lead the Cardinals while Marcus Jackson (9 catches) has averaged 21.7 yards per reception. Josh Powdrill has added nine receptions for Lamar, including a 73-yard reception against McNeese State while Kendrick Prejean has four receptions with a 36.0 yard average.

Cody Hussey leads Lamar on the ground with 76 yards in his first two games while Asim Hicks has totaled 16.5 tackles in his first two games.

The game marks the first between the schools since 1969 when the Lions claimed a 21-19 victory in Strawberry Stadium. Southeastern leads the all-time series with Lamar, 4-1, with the first three meetings coming prior to the end of World War II.

Lamar, playing as an FCS Independent, will officially join the Southland Conference in football, beginning in 2011.
