Defense Makes Key Stops As Lions Work In Shells

Lions practice in morning before holding annual Media Day in afternoon

Mark Newbill (11) had one of the defense's two interceptions in the Lions' live situation.
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team was able to work on the grass practice fields for the first time since reporting to camp, working out in shoulder pads and helmets Saturday morning before holding its annual Media Day in the afternoon.

The Lions, who open the season on Sept. 2 against Tulane in the Louisiana Superdome, ended the workout with a three-drive “thud” session that consisted of contact but no contact.

Southeastern's defense allowed a couple of big plays, but held its ground in forcing two turnovers and keeping the Lions out of the end zone once.

Kory Theodore highlighted the first drive for the No. 1 offense with a tough reception with defensive back Robert Alford providing excellent coverage. The Lions nearly scored on the next play as Tyler Beatty missed Luis Sobalvarro in the end zone before the defense held to stop the drive.

On the second drive, Greg Johnson gave the offense a nice run-and-catch to put the Lions in scoring position, but the defense again held as Keiron Jones picked off a pass from B.J. Young. Mark Newbill ended the final drive as he picked off a deflected pass from Beatty.

Southeastern concluded with Media Day in the Victory Club at Strawberry Stadium where head coach Mike Lucas addressed the media. Players attending were Beatty, Tommy Connors, Ryan Godare, Kevin Hughes and Zeke Jones along with offensive coordinator Allen Rudolph and defensive coordinator Matt Webb.

The Lions will return to practice on Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. workout in shells before donning full pads on Monday.
