Southeastern Places Seven on Preseason All-Southland Teams

Yarborough, Newbill, Connors, Wilson, Walker, Hughes and Jones picked among league's elite

Senior defensive back Tommy Connors is one of seven preseason All-Southland honors
LAKE CHARLES – The Southeastern Louisiana football team placed seven student-athletes on the 2010 Preseason All-Southland Conference Football Teams which were released in conjunction with the league's football media day Wednesday at the L'Auberge du Lac Resort.

The six Lions honored include four first team selections – junior wide receiver Simmie Yarborough, senior defensive backs Re'Keem Wilson and Tommy Connors, as well as senior linebacker Mark Newbill. All four of Southeastern's first team selections were also preseason All-America picks by Consensus Draft Services. Senior offensive lineman Kevin Hughes, sophomore running back Zeke Jones and sophomore defensive lineman Devan Walker represented Southeastern on the second team.

Yarborough is the team's top returning pass catcher. After earning Louisiana Freshman of the Year honors in 2008, the Brookhaven, Miss. native topped his debut season with a breakout 2009 that saw him earn second team All-Southland and honorable mention All-Louisiana notice. Yarborough collected 57 catches for 803 yards and 12 touchdowns in his sophomore campaign, ranking among the league leaders in scoring (74, 4th), receptions per game (5.7, 3rd) and receiving yards per game (80.3, 4th).

Newbill, who hails from Monroe, is the team's top returning tackler. A first team All-Southland and All-Louisiana pick as a junior, Newbill led the Lions and ranked second in the Southland Conference with 110 total tackles in 2009.

In Wilson and Connors, Southeastern features one of the top safety tandems in the Football Championship Subdivision. Wilson earned first team All-Southland and second team All-Louisiana honors last season, as the Franklinton native picked off a league-high four passes last season.

Connors returns after suffering a season-ending injury early in the 2009 season. The Lion defensive efforts will be buoyed with the Marrero native's reentry in the lineup. Back fully healthy, Connors looks to regain his 2008 form. His junior season saw Connors earn consensus All-America accolades, leading the team with 108 tackles and recording a league-high four interceptions.

Hughes is the leader of a veteran Southeastern offensive line that returns four starters. The New Orleans native made the switch from right tackle to left tackle a season ago and thrived, earning honorable mention All-Southland honors for the second straight season.

Hughes will be clearing the way for Jones, who figures to see his carries increase after sharing the backfield with 2009 senior Jasper Ducksworth a season ago. The Springfield native posted a productive redshirt freshman season, finishing with over 600 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns.

Rounding out the Lion preseason All-Southland contingent is Walker, who like Jones, is poised to see his numbers increase with more snaps in 2010. A Baton Rouge product who prepped at Catholic High School, Walker finished with 36 tackles – including five for loss – as a redshirt freshman in 2009.

Defending Southland Conference regular season co-champions McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin led the league with 14 and 12 preseason All-Southland picks respectively. Southeastern and Central Arkansas came in next with seven selections, followed by Texas State (five), Northwestern State (four) and Nicholls (three).

The Lions kickoff their 2010 schedule on Sept. 2, facing Football Bowl Subdivision foe Tulane at 7 p.m. in the Louisiana Superdome.
