LAFAYETTE – Cody Gougler went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI and freshman pitcher Jordan Hymel pitched five innings in his second career start as No. 17 Southeastern Louisiana erupted for nine unanswered runs and rallied past in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette, 9-4, Wednesday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Cass Hargis and
Josh Cryer had two hits each as Southeastern (16-1) won its fifth straight game and swept the season series against ULL (10-7) for the second straight year.
Southeastern (No. 17 Collegiate Baseball, No. 30 NCBWA) trailed 3-0 after two innings before getting untracked against Cajun starter Michael Cook (1-1). The Lions scored two runs in the third inning. Brock Hebert was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before eventually scoring on a fielder's choice by Jeff Harkensee.
Josh Cryer followed with a sacrifice bunt that plated Hargis cutting the ULL lead to 3-2.
Gougler tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth when he laced a two-out single to right that scored
Justin Boudreaux and the Lions took the lead for good in the sixth when Boudreaux singled to drive in
Joe Sparacino.
Southeastern added three runs in the seventh when Gougler doubled down the right field line, scoring Cryer from first. Chad Gough-Fortenberry added an RBI single and Hebert drove in
Chris Franklin with a sacrifice bunt that gave the Lions a 7-3 lead.
Hymel (3-0) scattered nine hits and allowed three runs with no walks in his second start of the season. Freshman Stefan Lopez pitched the final four innings, allowing four hits and a run to earn his first career save.
Southeastern will return to action on Friday when it opens a three-game series at McNeese State. First pitch in Friday's opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. game on Saturday and a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
