HAMMOND – Led by Toyota/Southland Conference Women's Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year
Kyle MacIntosh, the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team placed a conference-high five student-athletes on the 2010 Toyota/Southland Conference Women's Soccer All-Academic Teams, which were announced by the league office on Wednesday.
MacIntosh, a junior defender from St. Catharines, Ont., was joined on the first team by Lady Lion sophomore forwards
Maiya Cooper and
Karly Dagys. Senior defenders
Nicole Brannigan and
Brittany Prieto were both second team selections.
Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle was pleased with the accomplishments of MacIntosh and to have his team well represented for its work in the classroom.
“Kyle is a shining example of the definition of a student-athlete,” Hornbuckle commented. “She is very diligent off the field with her studies as well as being a student of the game on the field. Kyle's natural leadership abilities and attitude will provide abundant opportunities for her chosen profession and life ahead.
“We are proud of the representation from Southeastern,” Hornbuckle added. “All our recipients are to be commended for their extraordinary efforts in the classroom and on the field.”
MacIntosh's honor marks the second straight year that Southeastern has had the Southland Women's Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year, as former Lady Lion
Dana Mayer earned the honor in 2009. MacIntosh, who entered the fall with a 3.84 grade point average and is majoring in kinesiology, is the fourth student-athlete in school history to earn the award, joining Mayer, Kari Yost (2006) and Alexis Tramacchi (2003).
A first team All-Southland and honorable mention All-Louisiana choice this season, MacIntosh, a member of the Southeastern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, is making her second appearance on the league's All-Academic squad. She along with Brannigan, a communication major with a 3.06 GPA, and Prieto, a 3.25 student in business administration, helped the Lady Lions hold opponents to a league-low 14 goals on the way to the regular season Southland title.
First team All-Southland and first team All-Louisiana selections Cooper and Dagys led the Lady Lion offensive attack. Cooper, a marketing major with a 3.29 grade point average, led Southeastern in scoring for the second straight season, finishing with 11 goals and earning third team NSCAA All-Central Region honors. Dagys, a biology major with a 3.68 grade point average, led the Southland Conference with nine assists to go with six goals.
The Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to the one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
