Fortenberry, Ndoumba Help Lions Hold Off Rival Jaguars, 85-77

Southeastern wins sixth straight in series; heads to face Alabama, Vandy

BATON ROUGE – Brandon Fortenberry and David Ndoumba each scored a career-high 22 points and Southeastern Louisiana made 13 free throws in the final 1:24 to hold off in-state rival Southern University, 85-77, on Saturday at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Deshawn Patterson added a season-high 14 points while Gary Dixon added 11 and Trent Hutchin 10 as Southeastern (5-2) defeated its in-state rival for the sixth consecutive time and improved to 1-1 on its current seven-game road trip. Southern, which was playing its first game in two weeks, fell to 1-8 on the season.

Southeastern built a 60-47 lead with 12:29 remaining on a free throw by Fortenberry before Southern chipped away capping a 16-2 run on a Julius Ingram basket that gave the Jaguars a 63-62 lead with 7:09 remaining.

Ndoumba, who finished 7-for-7 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the free throw line, gave the Lions the lead for good on the next possession as he scored on an uncontested dunk with 6:08 left.

Southern twice cut the lead to one – its last at the 4:13 mark on a bucket by Ingram that closed the gap to 68-67, but Southeastern pushed the lead to 77-69 after Patterson made one of two free throws.

The Lions pulled away from a 21-20 lead as Hutchin nailed a long jumper, Ndoumba added a pair of free throws, Fortenberry scored on a driving layup and Patterson added a steal and layup for a 29-20 lead with 7:41 left in the first half. Southeastern pushed its lead to 39-28 on a layup by Ndoumba before Southern scored the final seven points of the half to close to within 39-35 at the break.

Ndoumba blocked a career-high seven shots for the Lions while Dixon notched a career-high five steals. Southeastern finished 27-for-59 (45.8 percent) from the floor and went 26-for-34 (76.5 percent) from the free throw line, including 18-for-22 (81.8 percent) in the second half.

Ingram scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Southern, which finished 30-for-62 from the floor (48.4 percent) and 6-for-12 from behind the 3-point line. Blake Sanford added 19 points, including five 3-pointer for the Jaguars, while Brandon White added 10 points. Quinton Doggett pulled down 12 rebounds to pace Southern, which committed 21 turnovers which led to 32 points for Southeastern.

Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it faces Alabama in an 8 p.m. contest at Coleman Coliseum.
