FRISCO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana football team placed eight student-athletes on the 2010 All-Southland Conference Football Teams, which were announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Leading the way for the Lions was senior defensive back
Tommy Connors, who was named to the team as a first team selection. Southeastern was represented on the second team by junior wide receiver
Simmie Yarborough, senior offensive lineman
Kevin Hughes, senior defensive end
Nathan Clophus and senior linebacker
Mark Newbill.
Rounding out the Southeastern All-Southland contingent were senior linebacker
Ryan Godare, senior defensive back
Re'Keem Wilson and junior offensive lineman
Josh Penton.
Connors was named to the All-Southland team for the fourth time in his career, while Newbill, Hughes and Yarborough each made their third appearance on the all-conference squad. Wilson was named All-Southland for the second straight season, while Godare, Clophus and Penton were selected for the first time.
Connors showed no ill effects from missing the majority of 2009 with an injury. The Marrero native led the Southland with four fumble recoveries, while also finishing among the league leaders with 98 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 10 passes defended, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Connors was named the National College Football Defensive Performer of the Week after finishing with two interceptions in a 24-10 win over Tennessee-Martin.
Connors also finished as the program's career leader in forced fumbles, fumble returns and fumble return touchdowns. He was also among the school's career leaders in tackles, fumble recoveries, pass breakups, interceptions and tackles for loss. His four forced fumbles in 2010 also were a single-season school mark.
Despite missing the final two games of the season, Newbill finished the season with 107 tackles – second in the Southland. The Monroe native was named a FCS National All-Star after posting 17 tackles in a 21-20 loss at Football Bowl Subdivision opponent Louisiana-Monroe. Newbill finished his career as the school's career leader with 401 tackles.
Newbill and Godare gave Southeastern one of the most productive linebacking corps in the nation. Godare, who hails from Sulphur, finished with 51 tackles in 2010 and ranks seventh in school history in career tackles.
Godare's fellow Sulphur native Clophus had a standout season at defensive end, finishing seventh in the Southland with five sacks to go with 60 tackles and seven tackles for loss. At Central Arkansas, he had 10 tackles, two sacks and one interception. He finished his Lion career fifth in school history in career sacks.
Wilson was named to the team after leading the Southland in interceptions for the second straight season. With six interceptions, the Franklinton product completed his fourth season in Hammond ranked seventh on the school's career interceptions list.
Yarborough posted a big junior season, as the Brookhaven, Miss. native finished with 60 catches, 709 yards and nine touchdown catches. He caught eight passes for 114 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-24 league win over Texas State. He will head into his senior season set to become the school's most prolific pass catcher ever, as he already holds the program's career standard for receptions and receiving touchdowns.
Key to Yarborough's production was the work of offensive line standouts Hughes and Penton. Hughes, a New Orleans native, established himself as one of the Southland's elite offensive tackles. Penton, who hails from Splendora, Texas, started all 11 games at center for the second straight season.
Stephen F. Austin senior quarterback Jeremy Moses was named the league's Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. Moses' teammate, senior linebacker Jabara Williams was named Southland Defensive Player of the Year, while SFA head coach J.C. Harper was named the league's Coach of the Year after leading the 'Jacks to their second straight Southland title.
Central Arkansas defensive back Jestin Love was selected the Freshman of the Year, while Sam Houston State running back Tim Flanders was tabbed the conference's top newcomer. The All-Southland teams are selected by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
