Lady Lions Head to UCA For Southland Contest

Southeastern looks to move up in Southland East standings on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Rashima Jenkins is averaging 16.6 points per game in league play
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday, heading to Conway, Ark. for a 7 p.m. Southland Conference contest against Central Arkansas at the Farris Center.

The Lady Lions (8-10, 2-3 Southland) and the host Sugar Bears (13-5, 3-2 Southland) will be meeting for the first time this season with UCA scheduled to return to Hammond on Feb. 27. Wednesday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net. Live stats and live streaming are also available at www.ucasports.com.

Southeastern will be looking to bounce back from a 75-61 loss to Southland East Division leader Stephen F. Austin Saturday afternoon. The Lady Lions battled back from a seven-point halftime deficit to tie the game early in the second half, but SFA answered with a 20-2 run to take control of the game.

Junior forward Rashima Jenkins led Southeastern in scoring for the third straight game, falling just short of her career high with 21 points and sophomore guard Kelli Jenkins added 12 points. Freshman guard Erica Burgess dished out a team-high three assists in the loss.

The Lady Lions average 63.8 points per game and Rashima Jenkins leads the team with 9.9 points per game, averaging a team-high 16.6 points per game in Southland Conference play. Kelli Jenkins (8.7 ppg), senior guard Kim Edmonson (8.6 ppg), junior guard Chelsea Hix (7.0 ppg), senior post Zevy Ivory (6.9 ppg) and freshman guard Erica Burgess (6.2 ppg) are the other top scorers for the Lady Lions. Kelli Jenkins leads the team with 4.2 assists per game, followed by Burgess (2.6 apg).

With Rashima Jenkins becoming a more focal part of the offense, the three-point field goal has not been as a prominent part of the Lady Lion offense, though Southeastern is still hitting 6.1 shots behind the arc per game. Edmonson and Hix are two of the most prolific three-point shooters in the Southland Conference and in school history. With her two treys on Saturday, Hix became the fifth player in program history to make 100 career three-point field goals. Edmonson (85 3-FG) will likely join Hix among the 100-plus triples group later this season.

Behind a career-high 15 rebounds by Ivory, the Lady Lions out-rebounded SFA, 46-42. Rashima Jenkins narrowly missed her third straight double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. Saturday's game marked the 11th time this season Southeastern has out-rebounded an opponent.

Ivory leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per game and the Lady Lions have a plus-3.7 rebounding margin on the season. Rashima Jenkins is next with 5.7 rebounds per game, while junior center Rachel Mackie follows with 4.2 boards per contest. In Southland play, Rashima Jenkins averages a team-high 8.8 rebounds per game, while Ivory is pulling down 7.4 rebounds per outing against league opponents.

Defensively, Southeastern is allowing 64.7 points per game and has forced 18.4 turnovers per game. Ivory leads the team with just under a blocked shot per game and is sixth in school history with 72 career blocks. Burgess leads the team with 1.2 steals per contest, followed by Kelli Jenkins (1.1 spg).

Central Arkansas is the league's most improved team and has already more than doubled its win total from a season ago. Winners of their last three games, the Sugar Bears are a game ahead of Southeastern in the Southland Conference East Division standings, but are in their final year of transitioning from Division II and are not eligible for the Southland Conference Tournament.

UCA rolled past McNeese State, 76-58, last Saturday in Lake Charles. Freshman forward Megan Herbert posted her 18th consecutive double-double with a 15-point, 16-rebound effort. Sophomore guard Nakeia Guiden led all scorers with 20 points for the Sugar Bears.

Thanks to freshman sensation Herbert, UCA is averaging 77.1 points per game. Herbert leads the Southland Conference with 22.8 points per game and is one of three players averaging in double figures, along with freshman forward Desiree Rogers (12.5 ppg) and freshman guard Westin Taylor (10.2 ppg) with Guiden just short at 9.6 points per game. Freshman guard Micah Rice leads the team with 3.1 assists per game.

The Sugar Bears are averaging 6.6 three-point field goals per game. Taylor is tops on the team with 2.7 treys per contest and UCA features six players with double-digit threes made this season.

Herbert leads the Southland Conference with 13.9 rebounds per contest. UCA is out-rebounding opponents by just over seven rebounds per game this season. Rogers is second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.

Defensively, the Sugar Bears hold opponents to 63.2 points and force 18.4 turnovers per game. Freshman guard Britney Gowans is the team's top defender, leading UCA with 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocked shots per contest.

Southeastern is 4-3 all-time versus UCA. Last season, the Lady Lions swept the season series. Then-senior forward Kristy Carlin lit up the Bears for 24 points in a 71-54 win in Hammond and Carlin's double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) helped Southeastern rally for a 65-55 road win.

Southeastern will return home on Saturday, hosting Nicholls at 3 p.m. in the University Center. The Lady Lions will welcome back its Alumni to be honored and recognized on Saturday. The game will also be broadcast on the Internet only at www.LionSports.net.
