HAMMOND – Torrential rains in the Hammond area forced the suspension and eventual cancellation of the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team's match with Jacksonville State Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
With just over 12 minutes remaining in the opening half and Southeastern holding a 1-0 lead, visible lightning forced the student-athletes into the locker room. After a brief break in the weather, the heavy rains returned and rendered the playing surface unplayable.
Southeastern jumped to a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the match. After a corner kick by senior
Gloria Burkhart, JSU failed to clear the loose ball and freshman
Karly Dagys drilled it off the crossbar and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Before the delay, freshman
Maiya Cooper had a near miss that would have doubled the Lady Lion advantage.
“We were performing very well and were on our game today,” Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle commented. “We were dominant and in control of the match through the first 30 minutes and we were attacking well. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate. We'll just regroup and get ready for two tough matches on the road next week.”
Southeastern will head to north Louisiana for a pair of matches in its next action. On Friday, the Lady Lions face Grambling at 4 p.m. before facing Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at 1 p.m.
