HAMMOND – Troy's Bridget Duke scored 10 minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie and allowed the Trojans to send the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team to its first loss of the 2009 season Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
Neither Troy (2-0) nor the Lady Lions (1-1) had many scoring opportunities, but Troy made the most of one of its few chances. Southeastern held a 7-5 shot advantage and had several near misses in the second half.
“We did a great job creating opportunities and keeping possession,” Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle said. “However, we did not get the result we wanted to day due to poor decision making. We have to be smarter with the ball if we are going to be successful.”
After a scoreless first half that saw both Southeastern sophomore goalkeeper
Lacey Bockhaus and Troy net minder Ashley Branham each make several nice saves, Southeastern came out on the attack to start the second period. Just three minutes into the half, senior
Dana Mayer headed a shot just wide of the net off a nice cross from senior
Gloria Burkhart.
The Lady Lion defense held Troy to only two shots in the second half, however Duke made the opportunity count in the 56th minute. A good move by Niki Stamaris, followed by a perfect cross led to Duke being open and putting in the eventual game-winning goal for the Trojans.
The majority of the match was played on the Troy side of the field, however the Lady Lions could not find the net. In the 60th minute, Mayer again had a header that sailed just high.
In the final 10 minutes, charging Lady Lion junior
Brittany Prieto had her shot attempt miss just wide. The Lady Lions had one last opportunity with just over two minutes left, but Branham stopped a shot by Southeastern freshman
Lauren Stillians.
Southeastern will look to bounce back on Sunday when they head to Hattiesburg, Miss. for a 4 p.m. contest at Southern Miss.
