School Record-Tying Five First Team Selections Highlight Southeastern All-Southland Contingent

FRISCO, Texas – Led by a school-record tying and league-high five first team selections, 10 Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer student-athletes received recognition as the All-Southland Conference Women's Soccer teams were announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Southeastern was represented on the first team by senior midfielder Candice Wallace, senior defender Dana Mayer, junior midfielder Natalie Santana, sophomore goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus and freshman forward Maiya Cooper. Sophomore defender Kyle MacIntosh was a second team selection, while senior midfielder Gloria Burkhart, junior defender Nicole Brannigan, junior defender Brittany Prieto and freshman forward Karly Dagys were honorable mention selections.

“It's a true honor to have our student-athletes receive this well-deserved recognition,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle commented. “To have five student-athletes on the first team is a credit to not only their work rate but the work rate of our entire team. Those five have shown the dedication and will to be successful.

“We're also extremely pleased to see five of our student-athletes receive second team and honorable mention accolades,” Hornbuckle added. “The majority of our All-Southland selections will be returning, so we have a solid foundation to work with as we continue to build and grow our program.”

Santana, a native of Cypress, Calif., is the catalyst for a Southeastern offense that ranks fourth in the nation in goals per game and has scored 53 points on the season. An All-Southland conference choice for the second straight season, Santana has eight goals and 10 assists – one off the school record and ranking her among the national assist leaders. Her point total of 26 is the ninth-highest in school history and she also ranks among the program's career leaders in goals (17, 9th), assists (20, 3rd) and points (54, 7th).

Santana anchored the midfield by Wallace and Burkhart. Wallace finished the regular season with six goals and nine assists on the way to her third All-Southland nod. The Guelph, Ont. product ranks among the school's career leaders with 20 goals (6th), 23 assists (2nd) and 63 points (5th). Burkhart's assist total of eight is the sixth-highest in school history. Making her first appearance on the All-Southland Conference team, Burkhart, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, also had three goals on the season.

The Southeastern offensive attack also was infused with some new blood in the freshmen forward tandem of Cooper and Dagys. One of the nation's leading scorers, Cooper's totals of 13 goals (fifth) and 30 points (sixth) rank among the highest single-season tallies in school history. The Hawthorne, Calif. native is the first Lady Lion freshman to be named first team All-Southland since Wanda Regan in 1999.

Despite missing several games with an injury during non-conference play, Dagys established herself as one of the team's top threats. The Oakville, Ont. native finished the regular season with seven goals and four assists.

Southeastern is also 10th in the nation in both scoring defense and shutout percentage, anchored by Mayer. A three-time CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District selection, the Toronto, Ont. native is making her first All-Southland Conference appearance. All four members of the Southeastern defensive backfield were named All-Southland with Brannigan making her second appearance and both MacIntosh and Prieto making their All-SLC debuts. That nucleus helped Southeastern hold opponents to nine goals scored during the regular season and record 10 shutouts.

Bockhaus was in the net for 10 of those shutouts and was honored as a first team All-Southland pick. The San Leandro, Calif. product is the third Lady Lion goalkeeper to earn first team honors, joining Crista Wood (2006) and Southeastern Hall of Famer Allison Holladay (1997-99).

Texas State forward Britney Curry was named Player of the Year, while Bobcat coach Kat Conner earned Coach of the Year honors after helping Texas State repeats as league regular season champions. Stephen F. Austin took home both Newcomer of the Year (Jordan King) and Freshman of the Year (Kylie Louw) accolades.

The second seed in this week's Southland Conference Tournament in Natchitoches, Southeastern receives a first-round bye and will await the winner of Thursday's first round match between Stephen F. Austin and McNeese State for a 4:30 p.m. match on Friday. A win on Friday would put the Lady Lions in the Southland Conference Tournament final on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

Live stats and free video streaming are available at www.Southland.org for all tournament matches. Sunday's championship match will be televised live on the Southland Television Network (Charter Channel 22 in the Hammond area).
