Turnovers Plague Southeastern in 68-55 Loss at Alabama

Lady Lions fall to 1-4 overall

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama scored 25 points off 22 Southeastern turnovers and the Lady Lions fell 68-55 to the Crimson Tide in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday night at Coleman Coliseum.

Junior forward Rashima Jenkins and junior guard Chelsea Hix led Southeastern with eight points. Senior post Zevy Ivory and senior wing Quantae Thomas pulled down seven rebounds each for Southeastern, which was outrebounded 41-39 by the Crimson Tide. Sophomore guard Kelli Jenkins and freshman guard Erica Burgess had three assists apiece for the Lady Lions.

Trailing by 12 at the break, Kelli Jenkins cut the lead to 10 with a jumper with 16:10 left. However, Alabama answered with an 11-0 run over the next four and a half minutes, as a Russell layup put Alabama up, 45-24, with 11:43 left. Southeastern would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.

A trio of Crimson Tide players – Alyson Butler, Varisia Raffington and Ericka Russell – had 12 points apiece. Russell narrowly fell short of a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds. LaToya King came off the bench with a game-high six assists for the Crimson Tide.

Southeastern and Alabama played fairly evenly in the first eight minutes of the contest, as a layup by Kelli Jenkins knotted the score at 10 with 11:52 left in the opening half. However, Alabama answered with a 17-6 run, as a Raffington jumper pushed the lead to double digits with 3:42 left. Butler's third three of the half put Alabama up, 30-18, heading into the break.

Senior guard Kim Edmonson and Rashima Jenkins had four points to lead the Lady Lions in the first half. Butler dropped in 11 points and Raffington had eight markers in the initial 20 minutes for the Crimson Tide, who scored off 14 points off 15 Southeastern turnovers in the first half.

Southeastern will return home on Saturday, hosting Centenary at 3 p.m. in the University Center. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
