Lady Lions Drop 3-1 Decision to Lamar

Southeastern falls to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in Southland play

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana junior Allison Jones had a team-high nine kills, but Lamar held the Lady Lions to a .115 hitting percentage to earn a 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 25-19 victory in Southland Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the University Center.

Senior Lauren Mayer and freshman Alexis Braghini added eight kills each for the Lady Lions (6-12, 2-5 SLC). With the victory, Lamar improved to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in Southland Conference play.

Southeastern sophomore Arianne Cruckshank finished with a match-high 30 assists, while senior teammate Katie Collins chipped in 11 assists. Junior Alex Greer led the Lady Lions with 10 digs, followed by freshman Taylor Buckner with nine digs. Senior Julie Elliott and freshman Alexis Braghini each had a solo block and a block assist to their credit.

Lamar was led by Lauren Holdroff, who finished with a match-high 10 kills. Kaci Brewer and Wendy Krell added seven winners apiece for the Lady Cardinals. Alex Morford and Adrianne Meengs split time at setter for Lamar, finishing with 19 and 18 assists, respectively. Brewer led the team with 12 digs, while Jayme Bazile had a solo block and three block assists.

The first set was very competitive featuring four ties and one lead change. Southeastern senior Jessica Srajer and Holdroff led their respective teams with four kills apiece in the set. After a Holdroff error cut the Lamar lead to 23-22, Cynthia McCollum answered with a kill and Cruckshank followed with an error to clinch the opening set for the visitors.

Southeastern led by as many as seven in the second set, holding Lamar to a .038 hitting percentage on the way to taking the set, 25-21. Lamar came out the break much better, hitting .400 for the set on the way to a 25-16 win. With Southeastern leading 11-10, Lamar rattled off eight straight points to take an 18-11 lead and Southeastern never recovered.

Lamar scored the first five points of the final set and never relinquished its lead, closing out the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.

Southeastern will look to bounce back next Thursday, when it travels to Arlington, Texas for a 7 p.m. league match at UT Arlington.
