Lady Lions Embark on Final Conference Road Trip

Southeastern volleyball hopes to gain ground in Texas

HAMMOND -  One game out of the eighth and final Southland Conference Tournament spot, the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (9-14, 3-9 SLC) will wrap up its conference road schedule as the Lady Lions look to climb the SLC standings at Texas A&M Corpus Christi (3-19, 1-11 SLC) on Friday and Texas-San Antonio (17-9, 9-3 SLC) on Saturday.

"The conference is wide open at this point," head coach Julie Langford said.  "I still believe we're capable of getting into the tournament.  Obviously, we need some help after losing twice to Nicholls State (7-15, 4-8 SLC) and having them in front of us, but there's no sense worrying about the other schools in front of us.  We have to focus on each match one at a time.  And against Corpus and UTSA, we need to pass better, stay disciplined on defense , serve tough and block better and to have a chance."

First up for the Lady Lions this weekend will be a Friday night tilt at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.  The Islanders enter the contest at the bottom of the SLC West Division with a 1-11 conference record.  However, the Lady Lions are not looking past the Islanders' record.

"They're going to be a tough matchup," Langford said.  "They've had some ups and downs, but they have played really tough against some good teams.  Like I said, in this league any team can beat anyone else on depending on who shows up to play that night.  We need to be ready and come out with a lot of intensity on Friday night."

After Friday's match, Southeastern will face a quick turnaround and head to UTSA on Saturday.  The Roadrunners boast a 9-3 conference record, so the Lady Lions will be looking for the upset.

"UTSA is a strong team," Langford said.  "But they've had some up and down moments this year also.  If we compete the way we are capable of competing, we will have a shot."

Following the final SLC road trip of the season, the Lady Lions will face a Nov. 11 non-conference match at Southern to conclude their road schedule and wrap up a six-match road swing (their longest of the season) before returning home for the final matches of 2008.

First serve on Friday night is set for 7 p.m. with Saturday's contest slated to begin at 2 p.m.
