SOUTHEASTERN VOLLEYBALL RETURNS TO CONFERENCE PLAY

Lady Lions Host Northwestern State, Central Arkansas

HAMMOND -  The Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (4-6, 0-1 Southland Conference) will look to end a two match losing streak when the Lady Lions host a pair of SLC opponents this weekend.

Southeastern starts the weekend with a Friday night match against in-state rival Northwestern State (6-6, 1-1 SLC).  The Lady Lions and Lady Demons will each be looking to rebound from losses in their last conference outings when the two teams square off at 7 p.m. in the University Center.  Southeastern dropped a 3-1 heartbreaker to Nicholls State last Friday and Northwestern State returns to conference action after a straight set loss to Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday.

"The last couple of matches were tough for us," head coach Julie Langford said.  "But we've been working hard in practice to adjust and if we play the way we're capable of playing, we have a shot.  Northwestern State is always a tough squad.  But, we've created problems for them in the past and I expect us to match up well against them as long as we do what we need to do."

The Lady Lions face a quick turnaround when they host Central Arkansas (10-4, 2-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday.  Southeastern will have to prepare for an ascendant Bear program that finds tied for the conference lead in overall wins while still transitioning from Division II.

"Central Arkansas has been a strong team ever since I got here (in 2006)," Langford said.  "They are a very athletic and well-coached team and they've beaten some good teams on a tough non-conference schedule this year.  Our focus for them is the same as it is for all the other teams.  We need to minimize our own mistakes, play a solid all-around game and see who comes out on top."

Despite a pair of heartbreaking losses in their last two matches, Langford feels the Lady Lions have progressed enough recently to create a foundation for the SLC season.  But the third-year head coach knows that Southeastern has its work cut out for it this weekend.

"These are two very competitive teams and we have to play a complete game against them," Langford said.  "We've seen flashes where everything clicks and we play very well.  Now we just need to put that effort together on a more consistent basis.  Our serving has gotten a lot better and our defense has been aggressive.  We need better and more efficient passing, setting and hitting, and that will come during the season as the team continues to improve together."

The Lady Lions and Lady Demons will take the court at 7 p.m. on Friday at the University Center.  Saturday's tilt against Central Arkansas is scheduled for 3 p.m.  Admission to both matches is free for all fans.  Live stats will be available on
