Lady Lions Fall in Straight Sets at Lamar

Southeastern Volleyball Put Away by Hot-Hitting Cardinals

Box Score

Southeastern at Lamar Box Score (.html format)

BEAUMONT, Texas -
Sophomore outside hitter Kalynn Evans paced the offense with 10 kills, junior setter Kaite Collins added 26 assists and freshman middle blocker Paige Dollison hit a team-high .400 (7-1-15) for the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (7-10, 2-5 Southland Conference) on Saturday.  But it wasn't enough for the Lady Lions to overcome a Lamar Cardinal team (8-9, 6-1 SLC) that combined to hit .287 (40-13-94) as Southeastern fell in Beaumont 3-0 by scores of 23-25, 20-25, 18-25 on Saturday.

Looking to set the tone in a hostile environment, the Lady Lions jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first set.  Unfortunately, the Cardinals would battle back by winning five consecutive points to know the score at 5-5.  Evans and senior middle blocker LaToya Anthony led the way with four kills each and junior right side hitter Lauren Mayer added three kills in what would be a back-and-forth affair.

After Lamar pulled away with a 23-19 first set lead, Southeastern used a 4-1 run to pull to within one at 24-23.  However, a final Cardinal kill gave Lamar a 25-23 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Trying to battle back in the second, with Evans and Dollison each posting four kills.  Junior middle blocker Julie Elliott added another three kills on .600 hitting (3-0-5) as the Lady Lions looked to even the match.  Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, Lamar responded with its best offensive performance of the afternoon as the Cardinals combined to hit .324 (15-4-34)  in the second en route to a 25-20 win.

Trying to stay alive by forcing a fourth set.  Dollison led the way with three kills and Evans added two more, but it wasn't enough as Lamar's momentum carried the Cardinals through to a 25-18 win and a 3-0 defeat for the Lady Lions.

Southeastern will return to action when the Lady Lions visit SLC East Division rival Nicholls State on Wednesday.  The Lady Lions, who fell 3-1 to the Colonels at home on Sept. 26 will look to even the season series at one match each when the two squads meet in Thibodaux on Wednesday.  First serve is set for 7 p.m.
