BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team dropped its series finale Sunday, 8-2, to Lamar in Southland Conference action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
With three games remaining in the regular season, Southeastern (30-19, 18-9 SLC) leads Lamar (25-23, 17-10 SLC) by 1.0 game in the conference standings. The Lions are 2.0 games up on Northwestern State (25-20, 16-11 SLC) and 3.0 games on Nicholls (25-22, 15-12 SLC).
The Lions' magic number is two to repeat as the Southland's regular-season champion is two. Any combination of SLU wins and/or Lamar losses totaling two clinches the title for Southeastern. Nicholls and Northwestern State will be eliminated from title contention with either their own loss or one Lion victory.
Sunday, the Cardinals struck early and kept extending their lead. One run in the first, two more in the second and a solo home run by Lamar second baseman Kevin Duran extended the lead to 4-0 over the Lions.
A sacrifice fly and a wild pitch plated a pair of SLU runs in the sixth, but the Cardinals responded with three more runs in the bottom of the frame.
Lamar starting pitcher Travis Lutz (3-1) earned the win, allowing two runs – both earned – in 8.0 innings pitched. He scattered five hits and two walks, striking out six batters.
Truitt Webb (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – in 3.0 innings of work.
Connor Cuff (2-for-4) and
Dane Watts (2-for-4) both turned in multiple hits for the Lions.
