HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team picked up a run-rule victory, 12-2, over Nicholls in eight innings Thursday in Southland Conference action at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, clinching one of the two host sites in next week's Southland Baseball Tournament.
Southeastern (31-19, 19-9 SLC) scored 10 runs in the final three innings against the Colonels (25-24, 15-13 SLC), breaking open what had been a tie game.
Nicholls took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a leadoff walk and an RBI double.
The Lions scored a pair in the third, taking the lead for the first time.
Dane Watts led off with an infield single, advancing to second on
Ben Robichaux's single past the shortstop.
Brody Capps drove in Watts with an RBI single to left-center field to tie the game.
Peyton Woods gave SLU the lead, plating Robichaux with an RBI double.
A leadoff double in the fifth led to a run for the Colonels, tying up the game.
Southeastern regained the lead in the sixth on
Connor Cuff's 13
th home run of the season. The two-run blast to right put SLU on top, 4-2.
The Lions sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh, pushing across five on just two hits. A hit batter, a walk, a pair of Nicholls errors and a wild pitch contributed to the rally.
In the eighth,
Alex Perry and
Brody Capps produced back-to-back singles to open up the frame. After a pitch hit Woods, loading the bases with no outs,
Justin Williams drove in a pair with a single to left. Cuff ended the game with an RBI single to right field, bringing home Woods with the final run.
Truitt Webb (5-2) earned the win in relief of starting pitcher
Nik Toups. Webb tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, working around a pair of hits and a pair of walks, striking out two batters. Colonel starter Dawson Richard (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – in 6.0 innings of work.
Capps (3-for-5), Woods (3-for-4) and Cuff (2-for-4) all turned in multi-hit performances at the plate for SLU.

The series continues Friday, with the first pitch now scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
