SLU in Driver’s Seat Following Doubleheader Sweep at Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team moved a pair of games ahead of second-place Lamar after sweeping a doubleheader, 6-2 and 10-0, in Southland Conference action Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

With a pair of wins over the Cardinals (24-23, 16-10 SLC), Southeastern (30-18, 18-8 SLC) has a two-game lead over the rest of the conference field with four games remaining in the regular season.

The Lions pounded out six home runs on the day, three in both halves of the doubleheader, with junior shortstop Connor Cuff hitting three of them. SLU currently has 81 homers as a team, five shy of the program's single-season record established in 2024 and tied last season.

The Lamar series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m. on ESPN+.

Fans can listen to all the baseball action locally on KSLU 90.9 The Lion or worldwide online at either www.LionSports.net/listenlive or www.LionUpRadio.org, via the following apps – Lions Gameday Experience, Live365, iHeart, Audacy, TuneIn and MyTuner Radio - or on Alexa speakers (skill must be enabled first). GAME ONE – SLU 6, Lamar 2
The Lions took an early lead, picking up a run in the first inning.

Ben Robichaux was hit by a pitch to open up the game, before Brody Capps and Peyton Woods delivered back-to-back singles with one out to load the bases. Robichaux scored on a Justin Williams groundout.

Robichaux extended the Lions' lead with a solo homer in the third. The leadoff blast was his 11th of the season.

After Lamar cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame, SLU extended the lead back to two in the fourth with Alex Perry delivering an RBI groundout to bring in Brooks Wright.

The Cardinals pulled back within a run in the fifth with an RBI fielder's choice grounder.

Solo homers by Perry in the seventh and Cuff in the eighth extended the lead to 5-2 over Lamar.

Peyton Woods plated the final SLU run with an RBI groundout in the ninth.

Nik Toups (5-1) earned the win, allowing two runs – one earned- in 5.2 innings of work. He scattered four hits and three walks, striking out a career-high eight batters. Triston Todorowski picked up his fourth save of the season, tossing a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game. Lamar starting pitcher Chris Olivier (5-4) suffered the loss, allowing three runs – all earned – in the 6.0 innings pitched.

GAME TWO – SLU 10, Lamar 0 (7 innings)
The Lions struck early once again, picking up three runs in the first inning. Woods (1 RBI) and Williams (2 RBI) delivered run-scoring hits.

SLU added three more runs in the third. Consecutive singles by Woods, Williams and Cuff (RBI) preceded Dane Watts' two-run double.

Lion starting pitcher Blake Lobell cruised, retiring 11 consecutive batters at one point, and Southeastern blasted three more home runs.

Cuff launched solo shots in the fifth and seventh, while Capps knocked a two-run shot out of the park in the sixth.

Lobell (4-1) earned the win, scattering three hits and a walk. The senior from Holden, Louisiana struck out five batters on the way to his third complete game in his last four appearances. It was also the first shutout as a Lion. Lamar starting pitcher Jarret Williams (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs – all earned – in 3.0 innings pitched.
