HAMMOND, La. – Blake Lobell carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning Sunday as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 5-4, in Southland Conference action at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
A native of Holden, Louisiana, Lobell retired 18 consecutive batters following a first-inning error on his way to tossing the Lions' first complete game of the season.
Southeastern (23-14, 12-6 SLC) has won 10 of its last 12 games and currently sits in second place in the conference standings, one game back of Northwestern State (14-7 SLC).
The Lions provided Lobell with some early runs support against the Islanders (16-19, 5-12 SLC), picking up a pair of runs in the first before adding single runs in the second and third.
Back-to-back hits by
Brody Capps (single) and
Peyton Woods (double) put a pair of runners in scoring position in the first.
Rhett Centanni plated Capps with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Connor Cuff drove in Woods with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Ben Robichaux extended the SLU lead with a two-out home run in the second. The solo shot was his ninth of the season.
Woods was hit by a one-out pitch in the fourth, advancing to third on Centanni's single to left-center. He scored on a wild pitch.
A&M-Corpus Christi broke up Lobell's no-hit bid with two outs in the seventh on a solo homer by Jarrett Flaggert.
Islander shortstop Karson Krowka followed with a home run in the eighth. The solo shot was his first of the season.
Cuff extended the Lions' lead, 5-2, with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning. The solo shot was his ninth of the season.
A one-out single by Jackson Smith and a two-out homer by Flaggert, his second of the game and third of the series, wrapped up the scoring.
Lobell (2-0) induced a comebacker to end the game, picking up the win. He allowed four runs, all earned, on four hits. The senior right-hander did not walk a batter, striking out six. Islander starting pitcher Connor Schlect (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs in 3.0 innings pitched.
The complete game was the first by a Lion pitcher since Lobell fired one against UIW on April 5, 2025.
