HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team picked up a 10-5 win Saturday over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, evening up its three-game Southland Conference series with the Islanders at a game apiece.
Southeastern (22-14, 11-6 SLC) built a 6-0 lead through five innings behind the shutout pitching of
Lakin Polk. The native of Ponchatoula, Louisiana held the Islanders (16-18, 5-11 SLC) to a pair of hits through the first half of the game.
The Lions scored a pair of runs in the third on a wild pitch and an error.
Peyton Woods extended the lead, 3-0, with a solo home run in the fourth. The leadoff shot was his fourth of the season.
SLU doubled its lead in the fifth, taking advantage of three walks.
Rhett Centanni delivered a two-out, two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded.
Dane Watts followed with an RBI single through the right side.
The Islanders got on the board in the sixth and ultimately pulled within a run, 6-5, thanks to a bases-loaded walk and a grand slam by third baseman Jarrett Flaggert. It was his first home run of the season.
Southeastern extended its lead with a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.
Alex Perry delivered a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh. It was his 10
th of the season, tying
Brody Capps for the most on the squad. An Islander error led to a pair of unearned runs in the eighth.
Polk (4-2) earned the win, allowing four runs – all earned – in 5.1 innings of work. He scattered four hits and four walks, striking out four batters.
Triston Todorowski picked up his second save of the season, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings to close out the game. Islander starting pitcher Easten Smith (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing five runs – four earned – in 4.2 innings pitched.
Centanni (2-for-5) drove in three runs and was the only Lion with multiple hits in the game.
