Lions Continue Offensive Onslaught at ULM

MONROE, La. – The day after producing a season-high in both runs and hits, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team bested their run total Wednesday in a 16-5, non-conference win over ULM at Lou St. Amant Field.

Southeastern (6-7) pounded out 15 hits on its way to completing the sweep of the Warhawks (8-7).

It took an inning for the bats to get going, but from the second inning on, there was no looking back for the Lions.

Brody Capps led off the second with a triple off the wall in right-center field. Connor Cuff followed with an RBI single over the first baseman. Mo Little drew a walk, putting a pair aboard.  After a groundout moved both runners into scoring position, Justin Williams drove a one-out single back up the middle to plate both Cuff and Little.

Williams advanced to second on a balk by ULM starting pitcher Holden Hess. Blaise Priester brought Williams home with an RBI single to right field. After advancing to third on a walk and a fielder's choice grounder, Priester scored on a wild pitch.

A leadoff home run by Cuff in the third extended the SLU lead to 6-0. Later in the inning, a bases-loaded walk and a hit batter forced in more Lion runs.

Warhawk pitchers walked 14 batters, and hit two more, finishing one shy of the Southeastern single-game record.

Despite a two-run homer in the third and four more ULM runs in the fifth, the Lions continued to tack on runs.

SLU tacked on three runs in the fourth, two in both the fifth and sixth, and a final run in the ninth on Peyton Woods' two-out single down the right-field line.

In true Johnny Wholestaff-style, the Lions used 10 pitchers in the game with none working longer than a single inning. Seven of the 10 turned in scoreless outings.

Starting pitcher Luke Lirette (1-0) picked up the win in the designated short start. Hess (0-1) suffered the loss for the Warhawks, allowing four runs – all earned – in 1.1 innings pitched.

Eight different SLU hitters recorded a hit in the game with Cuff (4-for-5), Capps (2-for-4), Little (2-for-5), Priester (2-for-2) and Woods (2-for-3) all turning in multiple hits for the Lions.
